Yeah, this bloke I know from the U.K. told me that all guns are illegal in the U.K. and there is no possible chance that hunting is legal. Funny, I know people who will book a hunt for you in the U.K. and I know people who go shooting on a regular basis and even, heavens forbid, own firearms.
Me and him got into a heated discussion and he said that how as an ignorant colonist would I know the laws of his country, and he was right and anyone I know that hunts in the U.K. is probably doing so illegally.
Thank goodness he is the one that ended up making himself look like a wanker in the end.

I have had too many episodes of it being used disparagingly in the past, actually close to 100%. Usually in a rather pathetic attempt to appear superior so it rankles a bit. It is rather fresh in my mind at the moment. (rest snipped)









Now to bring some "hunting" to my post. "European" too as the settlers in 1840 were definitely born there. The local area had high grasses on these flood plains up to the waist of a man riding on horseback. The area was rife with ducks and kangaroos (and snakes). The local Aborigines used to 'fire' the grass after they dried out after Winter to encourage new "sweet" young grasses and the resultant infux of game (and also reduce snakes). They lived in the area during summer when it was warmer and migrated to the Murray River plains to warmer country during Summer, thereby also conserving game and resources in each area. I have a property named by Colonel William Light, the explorer and surveyer of SA, "Duck Ponds Creek" named to the large numbers of waterfowl then present (some still there too ). It still has the remnants of "canoe" trees and burn out 'shelter' trees. The gum trees along the rivers and deep soiled flood plains grew to great heights, and still do, at a guess some 90 to 100 feet or more.



Kangaroo, emu, euro, wallaby, lizard, snake, ducks and geese and other birds such as lorikeets and parakeets ad galahs formed the game diet. Yams, kumquats and quondongs (yes they are names of wild fruits ) formed some of their vegetative diet.



Those were the colonial days of European hunting here, some 160 years ago.

Truth to tell my ancestors considered Southern Russia (thank God not!), South America, South Africa, North America and Australia before deciding on Australia for some reason (probably religion was the reason).

On one hand it is less likely to be banned by 'public reaction' when people think it is illegal. On the other, once something becomes completely marginalised, it is the begining of the end. Thank God, fieldsports are common in the countryside of even the most restrictive countries of Europe.
-Example: how many people do you know, even hunters that are not aware that you can still shoot Elephant, lion, and horror of horrors a leopard in complete legality?
