I am using a French civilian MAS 36 hunting rifle in 8x60 "Magnum", made in 1947. Good gun, and the integrated muzzle brake is quite useful. Wish I could find a MAS 36 in 10,75x68...

Hello; From the German forum I like to visit, these guys seem to be oriented towards american calibers, including the big ones you wouldn't think they had a use for. I don't think there have been any recent european calibers that have been a commercial success. I woud guess their 8x57 are dissapearing for the same reasons some other military calibers are, the supply of cheap ammunition is dried up. Grizz

Yes, this is the royal mess about 8x57I(R) vs. 8x57I(R)S. Presumably at some time, the Germans decided to move from a .318" to a .323" bore, and STILL keep the 8mm designation - calling the .323" bore "S". I have always found that a somewhat incomprehensible decision. At least one could have changed the caliber designation (other than the misery "S"). But there it is... The black primers indicate a .323" bore, so don't use this ammo in a .318" bore rifle...
What a totally maniac decision on the Germans' part at the time... (shaking my head in disbelief...)

I know there is two kinds of 8x57, one has its primer smeared with black paint. A mistake is to be fear. May be it' one reason for this calibre is set apart. Hi mho, my answer is coming.

All the major rifle and ammo manufacturers in Europe seem to offer the 8x57.
I have owned both a Mannlicher and a Heym in this calibre. It is a first class cartridge for boar, stag and African plains game. There is still vast amounts of military surplus ammo available.
I traded my last 8x57 for a 318WR and I have available 8x57JS RCBS X dies and 150+ pieces of RWS and Norma brass if anyone wants to make me an offer...

8x57 is revitalized with the 8x57 IRS. This calibre is not as mechanism-punching as 7x65R in double and therefore very appreciated in double, especially in cheap ones. Little recoil, little rifle-strain. A funny thing,8mm (280) is a cursed calibre. Jean Bernard

Here in Sweden you'll see a decent number of 8x57 users but the are generally older men with their trusted guns. There's a lot of very niced used gun in circulation in 8x57 but almost no new ones. And all the youngsters want to use something new and "modern" not the same cartridge as their father and grandpa is using. Since we get a lot of our trends from U.S there's a tendency among the younger hunters to think that they need a magnum not a "old mans cartridge".

the 8x57 IS and 8x57 IRS are still very much alive and well in Germany and much of europe. In France, military claibers are not allowed so there you only see the 8X57 IRS.
there is no need for magnm calibre, germany fought 2 wars with same cartidge,and this cartridge is very well balanced, my father took probably over 200 hundred wild boars with 8x57jrs which is same as 8x57js, i rather cary 8x57jrs tat 338 winchester

ACTUALLY 8X57 IS ONE OF THE MOST BALANCED AND MOST EFFECTIVE HUNTING CARTRIDGES IN THE WORLD. it has been used allmost everwhere in the wrld to take allmost every kind of games. it is capable round with good killing power for average big games and very pleasnt to shoot loaded with european norms it can do allmost every thing a 3006 can do if not better.
