SL,

Nice ..... they really do like to get out on the beginnng of the "green" bits after a long winter, don't they?

From the looks of your Hapy Snap you could whack a coupla Roe in the morning and have a good crack at the pigeons during the day aftwerwards.

Nice pictures, I like the gorget patches on that roe...is it just me or does he have a gash on his rear leg? Barbed wire fence?

Now that's what I'd call a Target Rich Environment!! Maybe take a Combo/Drilling out for a short walk?

Now, if were only May.

Bog you are correct and its a shame that so many deer get injured with the fences on the ground.I have had to shoot two that had bad leg brakes this year. Stone walls and barbwire dont do deer any good.
Same ground this fella didnt make the end of winter.

Hi Davie,

Thanks for posting - great pictures and some impressive beasts.

Tell me more about your camera and lenses please - Jo is starting to take some phots when we are out stalking, thogh the size of the image seems to be the problem when dealing with wild deer!

I have made these lovely photos very simple camera from a distance of 30-40 metres three years ago. And today has recollected about them.

Ian,

I've been using a Nikon D40X with a 55-200 or 300 lens on it which takes some great pics. Problem is that I don't take it into the field with me as it is too big to carry with sticks/rifle etc... I used it in RSA and also on the Tuna charters last year and it worked really well. I'm going to start taking it upto the highseats with me now.

Not sure about price these days but it is good.

SLDG, keep them coming. The different focal planes in that last one are great as you get the buck in focus and the detail on the tree which really makes it work. some of the new hybrid cameras are great and have some excellent features while being far more portable than an DSLR

Rgds,
K

You are right mate tht buck has got malformed antlers and is carrying an injured back leg i will have a look at him again when he is clean and decide then if he is a keeper or on for the freezer. There are other good bucks in the area and it will depend on what they turn out like.

Gabe, you are right, I didn't look closely at the top photo, the fence post growing out of the left antler fooled my eye.

Thanks for sharing photos. I can't wait for buck season even though I think the population have decreased dramatically due to a hard winter. I was out calling foxes this morning and saw three roe right beside on of my three stands. One of them was a buck. So I hope that I will have a chance.

Opened mine - got this little fella (if one want's to shoot a trophy one prior June the 1st here - he must get a B category yearling buck - spikes less than 10cm). Getting one can be quite tricky business - either you meet one unintentionally or it is a "war" of nerves and patience, since territorial bucks are chasing them off at first sight and they end up wandering around with no obvious plan and schedule...played a cat&mouse with this one on Saturday from 18.00 when it was first spotted and finaly shot at 20.50 (sunset was at 20.10 here) - very hard estimation and very hard shot at 120m at almost pitch black - here is where top qual. 56mm lenses played their part .

Took a Belgium chap out and was very surprised at his knowlage of our country side and his true sportsman like attitude. He had asked if i had any old bucks that were by there best on my ground and said this is the type of trophy he would like .After 3 outings and no old bucks on the ground i was starting to panic after all this man had travelled hundreds of mile to shoot with me. We passed on buck after buck i my self thought i had a man that didnt want to shoot deer out with me. Then on his last outing we got in to a very old buck head low and a real old head on him. He took the buck in real stile off sticks 90 mtr .This is what i want he said and the relief i felt was great. I am sure he would not have botherd if he had shot nothing but i am not used to this type of sports man. Most of the chaps i have taken out would shoot the first buck that crossed there path.

A large pregnant Doe passed us as we waited

The buck on the ground and i am sure it will make a bronze a trophy worth waiting for i think.

VT He did hit the deer hard and was useing my rifle because the belgians are not aloud a moderator and some of my ground demands it. The shot was straight through the front sholder and sucked the lungs out the rear a trait of my 65 with SST,s at 129 grain. Big Grin The money thing well this was a straight swap for a go at wild boar hopfully i will be a restrained as this man. The buck its self bog will make a bronze medal i am sure of that and the chap is over the moon saying how he enjoyed his stay .He never even complained about the wife cooking now thats got to be some restraint.

Indeed! This is the proper and an admirable kind of attitude. He does deserve this buck and sure must have gotten quite some satisfaction out of doing it the right way.

Those two I've pictured above are young bucks - 3 years old at best - old guys are only beginning to shed and should be done till mid of June - same goes for pregnant does. If I'd stumble upon a buck in full winter coat ATM I could shoot it on sight without even bother to check other signs of age and I'd bet it would be older than 6 years (or sick somehow).

well done mouse, and with the 9,3 , i really like that caliber for roe as well, i find that with 286 grains bullets i dont get any meat destruction at all, even when shot through the shoulder.

best
