I am looking to do a mouflon hunt in Europe and was wondering where is the best place to hunt a gold medal free-ranging mouflon? I have seen a lot pictures of nice rams out of Austria. thanks

Czech Republic is the #1 spot for big mouflon, followed by Hungary and then everywhere else is kind of a toss up. A lot of European mouflon are behind fence, same as in your great state. www.diana.dk if you want to pay Euro prices (cheaper). Lots of American booking agents (Hunting Consortium, Cabelas, Safari Outfitters and so on) have European programs for mouflon. But you will pay the fleecing of America prices typical by their outfitters. One of your fellow Texans shot a big ibex, mouflon, red stag and wild boar in Austria a few years ago. Search the hunt report forums for the story. His outfitter (can't remember which one it was) is highly prized among both European and American clients. I lived in Spain and Italy for a combined period of about 5 years. I am not an expert on all things hunting Europe, but I have been around to know who some of the clowns are.

If you put somewhere in the neighborhood of $5000-7500 toward this project you will have a free range mouflon without much equal in the world. A ram in his 8th-12 year of life.

+1 Czech Republic. Croatia also gets some nice rams on the chalk cliffs on the coast.

Czech Republic is probably #1, but I have heard about a lot of outfitters selling high fenced hunts as free range. So, when I was looking to hunt in Europe, I decided that the 'free range' part was more important than the 'huge'. I got lucky and got both - I went to Austria and here is a link to my hunting report. http://forums.accuratereloadin...8321043/m/5541043391 By the way, Klemens is at the Dallas Safari Club every year and he books direct so that you're not giving a cut to a booking agent.

The top trophies are indeed very often shot in fenced areas especially in Czech Republic. A matter of taste but if I would go for free range mouflon I would choose Croatia or better one of the Croation islands.

As others here have mentioned; I consider CZ Republic an oustanding Option for free ranging monster/large/full-cull Mouflon. Please PM. Cheers, Number 10

I went to the Czech Republic for muflon in 2011. Due to the sika rutting season the hunt was limited to sitting and waiting on the high seat, contemplating a huge amount of sugarbeet uset as forage and bait. The "hunting" schedule was from 5 am to 8 am and from 5 am to 7 pm. For the rest of the time we (2 friends and me) idled in the lodge, as we were requested not to move around, disturbing the sika. We suspected that the real cause was the excessive obesity of the owner-manager of the forest, a large guy exceeding 350 lbs. At the end we succeeded in shooting (better, executing) two good rams (one of us missed) but it was not our idea of sport. Last year three frinds of mine went, just by coincidence (not so much, as the agent was the same) to the same forest for sika. The large guy, fattened in the meantime, declared that he had problem to walk more that 50 meters. They, too, sat contemplating sugarbeet but were less lucky than us. Just one of them shot a stag, while the others never raised the rifle. Moreover, the Czech republic is famous for large fenced area, hosting all possible game but fenced nevertheless. At the opposite, many years ago (1992-1993) I enjoyed stalking mufflon in Hungary, on the Pilis Hills near Budapest and on the Bukki Hills near Miskolc. In Hungary the prices are based on the length of the horns, instead of the crazy CIC points used by the Czechs and it is easier to identify a shootable ram with a minimum of practice.

I would look to Croatia on the Adriatic coast line. The French Pyrenees is also a great area with some very big trophies.
