Obstruction Tests For some reason, the videos won't play on Firefox, but work fine on IE.... As some back ground, a Swedish consumer organisation decided to test firearms performance - one of them safety under catastrophic failure. They sealed the barrels (barrel stoppage) and fired a round while filming with a high speed camera. Browning and Remington were concluded to be downright dangerous for the shooter. Suprisingly Howa and Blaser R93 earned top marks all around, closely followed by Steyr, Tikka and Sako. I have asked the guy who posted this originally on another site if he has any more info, particularly the calibers being used. For the test to be in any way fair, the rifles should all be of the same caliber and shooting factory ammo from the same batch. Regards, Pete

the test must have been manipulated, the R93 didn't blow up but you must remember they tested just one rifle from each maker.

Pete. The rifles were all in cal. 30-06. And the obstruction was a 30 cal bullet that was hammered approx 10 cm down the barrel. What I have seen on the internet, nothing is mentioned about what happen to the bullets in the rifles that didn´t blow up, but one can assume that they went the way they should; out of the barrel. They also tested the extractor against a empty hull locked in the chamber. Max pull was 100 kg, and all exept Antoni Zoli passed. The much cursed little Remington extractor worked ok it seems Anyway..interesting video footage. Arild Iversen.

Now thats an interesting bit of experimentation, surely this really only concludes about barrel quality not chamber / bolt safety in the event of a heavily blocked barrel?

Since there are so many bolt action military rifles and their sporterized versions in use, it would be interesting to see those rifles, like Mauser-s M98 and M96, Springfield, Lee Enfield and others, how they will do on same test.

This test was an overall test of a range of popular "Älgstudsare", i.e. a Class 1 caliber rifle for Swedish moose hunting including accuracy, durability and the ability to withstand an obstructed barrel. The overall "winner" where the cheapest gun "Howa" which over here retails for about $850, second place Blaser R93, local retail $3.700. The Sako did well as I am quick to appreciate! Interesting, but I agree with Nightwalker that the test is irrelavent toward the actions as none failed. It was a test of the rupture strength of the barrels, which is affected by both metallurgy and the thickness of the steel. Simply substituting a "varmint" barrel might have made a huge apparent difference in the Remington, for example.

I guess the selection was a line of "comparable" and popular rifles, i.e. commonly bought rifles for Swedish hunters and with that in mind, the test has relevance IMO.
