The rut has kicked off with lots of chasing yesterday and today and bucks and does coming to the call.

Any luck from forum members so far? Any monsters waiting in the wings?

I had a coupple of does responding to my call here the other day, but no buck to be seen yet. I'll give it another week before I try again. Some pictures from the does and my call

Lovely pictures mate .I was out on thurday and saw my first real sign that the does had come into season had a monster buck on the back side of a doe she was teasing him silly lol sorry about the quality but it was misty.

A quick question regarding your call, do you find it gets better responses than the buttolo?

One day this little Aussie will be over there. They are a magnificent smaller animal.

They are that!

Graceful, attractive and loads of character. They really are my favourite species.

Add to that, the joy of stalking in the summertime and the adrenaline of the close stalks - yep, tough to beat.

Actually I have only used this german hand made flute twice, and both times does has responded at once. With the buttolo I have had no success so far. I've used the buttolo for a coupple of years, and truth is that I've never had anything responding to it! Maybe it's just bad luck or wrong place, wrong time....who knows

Thank you for the reply, i'll give the buttolo another go this season and we'll see what happens.

Counting down the days till the 10th August

Was out this weekend near Salisbury, and the action was definitely warming up; saw quite a bit of chasing going on, admittedly most was from younger bucks, but the rut this year seems to be screwy due to the warm April/May we had.

Did manage to take the below out, which was fun. Am now on the lookout for a monster we saw in mid-April and has been seem by some locals lately, but not by us

I've seen quite a lot of chasing, shot bucks and called does but so far no heart stopping moments with bucks springing - fingers crossed!

Certainly full on this morning! No need to call just scrape a foot in the leaves or stalk within view and move a little.

Saturday 30th of July 8.25 PM - came to a call - shot with irons at 50m off hand - my best buck ever...

I knew him from 2009, in May 2010 was the last time I saw him after that till Saturday never again. It was just strange that no other buck had been seen at that spot so I guessed he was still around - and he was. Not that old - estimated age app. 5-6 years.

I keep on chickening out of taking the scope off my 06........... I thought about it this evening but it was too dim under the trees.

I know - very frustrating...happens to me all the time - happened with this buck in 09 when I first saw it, he was high on the slope some 200m away...stil I hung on and it played out great (might not as well tho )...well at the end it all boiled down to shear determination and damn luck - to make it even better - this buck was there right under the noses of the local boys (6 hunters live inside 1km perimeter from where he was shot) that didn't have a clue about his whereabouts - no need to mention I have ruffled some feathers I guess and I'll have to watch my back for some time now?

Roes will always have a special place in my heart...hard to abide their uniqueness, different personalities and challenge they can present when you concentrate on a particular animal on its ground...it can become a clever game just like chess sometimes. Yes late May - early August will always be Roebuck time of the year for me.

Here in Norway there's still some days to go before seasons kicks off. Went to pick up one of my trail cams yesterday. Two different bucks, a doe and a calf. As well as badger, foxes and othe small stuff.

Put out a couple of pics on my blog.

Anders dont worry to much i feel there might be a few days left in the rut.I was out this morning with a chap and we saw 5 good bucks and a couple of not so go bucks really going at it and rutting hard. We took one each and i gave my new puppy a bit of training. Good luck when it starts over there.PS how long have you got to wait till it kicks off.

Argh! Sonfrustrating... Just 2 days in Sussex chasing roe around... the crop still hasn't come off down there, and while we had PERFECT weather, wind (none) and light, the chase is completely busted out! Not even the does were responding to calls... I am lost... Seems the weird weather in April / May blistzed them out completely.

Did manage to take out a couple of crappers from the gene pool. But didn't see one bigger buck we saw in May & June

Hope others are having better luck! Will be back out early September, hope its better then.

Don't give up. The rut is a moving thing, weather and oestrus dependant that only loosely conforms to dates.Plus I think calling is a bit over stressed. While we all love to call a buck I only manage it about 20% of the time. The main advantage is bucks showing themselves, not paying much attention to things that would normally have them running for cover and being able to stop them momentarily when they bust you and run off.

I've been stalking like a lunatic for 3 weeks solid and with the cold and windy weather was ready to give up this week. I saw little activity but the moment the sun got some heat on Tuesday morning (about 7am or so) a buck which had been grazing with a doe suddenly got a royal hard on, chased the doe and had her mounted within a minute or two.

Warm weather, sun etc will still have them in the mood right up until next week IMHO. The latest I've called or seen chasing is the 3rd week of August.

Also don't forget calling tends to work better late on. Plus chasing starts as early as second week in July. None of the bucks I've shot this week have had an ounce of fat around their kidneys so they've had a pretty good go at it this season I'd say.

I tend to go through a period of mourning after the rut what I have to get closer? but in truth I think when the crops have come off, light is at a saner time is often a better time.

Agreed - I don't know how many times I have declared 'the rut is finished this year', only to see classic chasing and rutting behaviour a day or two later.

It appears to have been a prolonged process this year.

Rut started 3 weeks ago but went only slowly and just picked up recently. Tuesday, I shot this buck at 21:10.

Bucks still comeing to call in scotland this morning. Big buck came to the call this morning and he was very keen .Also got some work for my 6 MONTH OLD BMH

Thanks Mr. G That will be my last roe of the season the rut is now in my opinion finnished were i am and that is when i finnish. I wish all you lads across the water well and hope the bucks dont disapear to much.
