My K-Hornet wears a 3-9 Leupold Compact. Most hornets are compact guns and look and feel better with a proportionately compact scope. I'm partial to Leupolds and would recommend the 3-9, 2-7 or straight 4x in a compact model.
Some owners of the Burris compacts complain of excessively critical eye alignment and eye relief, but I have never owned one and can't say if this is a problem.
I've always been puzzled why more manufacturers don't make a compact line.

I have a Leupold 3x9 compact on my Ruger Hornet and like it. The only thing I would change is to increase the magnification. Sage rats out at 150+ yards are pretty small targets unless they stand up. Unless you're after small ground squirrels a 3x9 should be great for your Hornet.
I put a Burris compact 3 X 9 on my Anschutz 1433 Manlicher stocked .22 Hornet. I found that most regular scopes looked too big and made it look strange. The compact Burris fits it nicely and looks likes it belongs on it.

On my CZ 527 Hornet I have a leupold Vari X 11 3-9x50. This rifle is primarily my easy to manouvre ute spotlighting rifle and it does it's job fantastically. The 50mm objective lens I think helps under the spotlight. If I do my part I rarely miss head shots with this combo out to 150-200 yards. The scope is also not large that it does not look out of place. But all suggestions given have been good. However I would stick to Leupold.
