Looking for a place closer to KC Missouri that has good dog hunting. Does anyone know of a good place in Kansas that has good shooting? AK

You need to get out to the western part of the state. Take a weekend. Go out there and drive around, Stop and ask the farmers and ranchers about the local dog populations. Do the scouting first. Then go back to get some hunting in.

MoHunt: P-dogs are one of the first things I checked out when I moved to Eudora, Ks., about 12 miles from Kansas City. I moved here from Grants, New Mexico, which is in Cibola County, just above where R. Walter lives in Catron County. I used to go to Bonita Canyon in the Zuni Mountains to shoot p-dogs, then later just took a trip down New Mexico 117 to shoot p-dogs on the Cebolla Wilderness side of the road, the same place where, in July and August you could see upwards of 100 elk grazing in the huge park I visited there. R. Walter is right, though, about the p-dogs here. I was told they do exist in good numbers in the western part of the state. I do not know how receptive the ranchers would be for someone to shoot them on their ranches though. I had to move from Grants at an elevation of 6,500 feet to Eudora at an elevation of 900 feet because of some serious health reasons. I tell ya, I really miss the p-dog shooting there. There might be some pretty good coyote hunting around these parts, though.

I'm going to reply to myself here. I just looked on the map and way, way out (440 miles from Eudora) is the Cimarron National Grasslands managed by the National Forest Service. The place is at the very southwest corner of Kansas and is 108,000 acres large. It has upland game, mule deer and whitetail deer, antelope, coyotes and p-dogs according to the place's bio that I read. No asking permission there, just check in with the ranger I would imagine and hunting is allowed, by the way. Good Luck ... Tom Purdom

As of this winter 2005-2006 would certainly advise checking before driving. Have had a lot of plague down on the Cimmaron. I have lots of shooting bud's close to there & that is word I get from them.

Well I don't know about the plague. But you can call down there and find out what the situation is like. I was out there July 2005 for a two day hunt. Great place to hunt p-dogs. Long damn drive though...So stay a couple of days. If you have never been, here is some advice... Watch out for rattlesnakes, watch very closely. Little bastages hide in holes in the afternoon.. Good luck and kill a bunch. Make every shot Count!!!

One of these days I will post the story about the rattlesnake and the guy that went with us July 2005. Oh hell I will let you fill in the blanks and give you the short version. Ever shoot a 22-250 at a rattlesnake in a hole in the ground at 2 feet? 3850 fps 55 grain nosler ballistic tip...Not sure what the energy is at 2 feet.... But I can tell you don't be within 10 feet any direction of the hole unless you want rattlesnake guts all over you.... Oh I still laugh about it....To my good luck I was about fifteen feet away...The guy kept saying "What the hell is that smell?" I didn't have the heart to tell him he had rattlesnake guts in his cookie duster.... Too damn funny!!! Make every shot Count!!!

I live 45 min from the grass lands. PD hunting is still open in all areas. Plauge has been around for several years now. Just have to take some preacautions in the Summer. Need to use bug repelant. You can get the plague from fleas that feed on infected PDs. It rare to catch even if bitten. Thought I'd posted to this already. Never knew it was p/dog HUNTING!! Always considered it shootin and not huntin. not much huntin to it out here. Just go down the road til we see um, then stop and ask for permission. Usually isn't very hard to get. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!"
