Don't laugh! The .22 Long Rifle... Cheap to shoot, effective out to 100 yards, and I keep my sweet little Browning BAR-22's 4 power scope zeroed for 100 yards. The top of the 6 o'clock duplex just happens to be my 200 yard zero, good for aggravating rabbits at that range.
For centerfire rifles, I'd go with the .223 Rem. It's forgiving, adequately powerful, and brass is never an issue.
My first centerfire (788 rem) was chambered for 222 and have purched 2 more since and all are fine shooting rifles!! Second favorite is 221 Fireball. I really like the XP-100 and am waiting for warmer weather to try my new 700 Clasic.
Epress: I think my all round favorte centerfire is the accurate, economical (small powder charge for large type performance, brass lasts forever etc) and efficient 22 Remington Bench Rest! Fantastic Varmint round this! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
