VG...Take a deep breath and count to a hundred...now do you feel better? I assume that you must own remington stock & options. Whoa...

Everyone has preferences just like salt & pepper. I will also agree with you that Savage is butt ugly but man do they shoot.
Original question was about a budget rifle that is the most accurate. Savage fills that bill. perhaps Savage should hire away Big Greens marketing team...then we will all be happy.

VG...since you are the resident expert on big green...I would appreciate your opinion on the remington model 710???

As to accuracy...that is a subjective item...100 yards versus 1000? I will leave you with a question...If your bullet placement is correct...will your elk or deer know if it was shot with a MOA rifle or a 2 1/2" grouper at a 100 yards. Accuracy is between the ears...not necessarily the rifle itself.

mad, that is the only group so far with the 168`s.I can sit over here in the basement and load 10 then shoot them at my range out the basement door.then I can load some more to tune the load. The way I am set up I dont have to load a bunch and go shoot them all,I can check the changes as I make them.Saves a bunch on powder and bullets.
I plan to try that same load with a hotter primer this evening.

I'LL SAY,
I made the mistake of introducing a friend of mine to the 788s. I have a $150 "close out" in .223 that will shoot as well as any high grade .223 made. He tried it and got the bug.
He just e-mailed me the other day, he had just picked up his EIGHTEENTH 788, this one in 22-250.

He has rebarreled a couple into such as 257 Ackley improved etc. Almost everyone I have introduced 788s to over the past has bought at least one for themselves.

WyomingSwede: No deep breathing needed here. The reality is Remington is a better looking, better shooting, better value Rifle than the savage! I do not care at all for the new 710 Rifle Remington has produced. It is nearly as unattractive as the savage line! I just returned from a Varmint Safari with a friend and no savage Rifles were seen, wanted to be seen or envied any where on this Safari! Among all the Rifles discussed the savage name was never once mentioned in any discussion with anyone! They are second rate at best and the company has not done anything in the way of cartridge development or enhancement in half a century at least. They are content to be in fourth or sixth place market wise (savage) and I think they are lucky to be that high!
Sakofan: Yes I have some very accurate Sako's now and have owned a few others in the past! Nope they are overpriced (by a lot) in the context of our present discusion. And I think by and large the Remington Varminters and sporters will outshoot the Sakos! At least that has been my experience. I do have a brand new to me Sako single shot bolt action Rifle (the Sako people forgot to designate the Model number on this Rifle!?) in caliber 6mm PPC. The Rifle has a Leupold 24X scope on it and was new unfired when I purchased it! I have just started (and just stopped) load development on it. The barrel breakin was achieved then the Rifle shot these load development groups til I settled on one. (5 shot groups at 100 yards) measuring .443", .389", .421", .664", .212" and .226"!
The last two groups were noted as superb in my loading log and they are the load I chose for this Rifle. So yeah some Sakos shoot well but my particular Rifle was seen by a Varminting acquaintance of mine and he offered me $1,100.00 for the Rifle alone not including the scope. So that Rifle is again over bounds of our current discussion. Does Sako make a Varminter costing less than $700.00 I do not recall seeing one!
And accuracy is most certainly not just a subjective factor it is easily and always can be quantitatively expressed! I keep exact records of all my Rifles shooting ability that I investigate. Easily done this and the records of such are very handy when discounting outrageous claims! I only rarely commit to these type exchanges but when I do I do not back down from things I know to be untrue claims. The Varmints I and my friend removed from reality on this recent Safari where all done in by Remingtons!
Long may Remington reign over savage!

Here's what my non-existent, second rate, POS, 12FVSS .223 bone stock Savage did today. I think I'll make a tomato stake out of it?

Looks good there man,for the record I never said your gun was junk, but dont kid yourself into thinking yours will outshoot every Rem 700 that has been built in the last few years.

I had a target with 10 5 shot groups on it that avg .345 but lost it when I moved. It was the 135 flat based Berger with 41 grs 3031.May have to order some and see if it will still do it.I been trying the heavier bullets but this gun really likes the 125 NBT and the 135 Berger.

LETS KEEP it more civilized or I will be forced to drag out my FN SPR and REALLY thrash the Remmytin chest beater.
Lets face it, there ARE better factory rifles out there then either Remmytin or Savage produces.
Both are good rifles. [Big Grin] BUT, before I tricked the 10FP with a different stock and trigger, it would still shoot 1/2"-3/4", just had to work a little harder.
Now it is a consistent 1/2" or less.
And it still cost less then a PSS.

A gun THAT price that shoots THAT well, in NEVER a piece of "crap"

Webster"s 3rd Edition
prejudice - 1. an opinion, esp. an unfavorable one, formed beforehand or without knowledge or thought.

I think this is an accurate description of your opinion of SAVAGE.

A Howa would be my choice. My last one that I just got will shoot under .5 at 100 with good handloads.
