Can any of you guys point me in the right direction for fur friendly 250 ammo? Thanks. Mostly for bobcats and foxes. The ones we shot last night all got holes blown in them. I did like using the shotgun though that realy helped.

Good luck, fox and bobcat aren't very big. Some people use solids but they aren't legal everywhere. I'd try a different caliber like a 22WRM.

I've tried quite a few and have yet to find a truly friendly one. The Speer 52gr flat base hollow point with the large cavity opening seems to have been better over-all but even that and the frangible ones can still make a huge mess sometimes. If you slow it down and use the hollow-points that are known to come apart easy or one like an sx or blitz your results will be more pelt friendly.

I too find the Sierra hollow point with largest hollow point hole to be the friendliest. I know lots that use the plastic tipped bullets and I have tried but went back to the biggest hollow point I could find. Greg

get them down, dont worry about the holes, all the dogs can sneak off in seconds unless anchored, you will get more with less trouble using some fish line and a needle.. sew them just after skinning and punch a pencil thru the hole out to the fur side after each stich too keep the fur on the outside.. then when the hole is together streach them properly.. Many years ago o shot a coyote at about 225 yards in the knee, it blew its stomach out, he went no more than 5 yards, took 10-15 minutes to sew the pelt up... Foxes are very thin skinned of course, dont rip them more pulling the hide off.... If you want to stop the holes get traps.. I could trap the darn things but had a terrible time learing to call them.. either way its a long learning curve i guess... my opinion only..dave hunter, blackpowder shooter, photographer, gemology, trap shooter, duck hunter, elk, deer, etc..

Well, I really have not tried them as of yet, but Barnes brags about their Varmint Grenade bullets being fur friendly. They may be, the ones I am currently using on ground squirrels are only 36 grains and very explosive, I doubt that they would exit a critter that you wanted to save the hide on. In my 22-250, I am getting over 4400 fps, they really come apart, I doubt they would exit. In a 22-250 AI we used to get the same types of speed with 40 grain Ballistic Tips, I never saw one exit a coyote. R Flowers

First, as stated above, the 22-250 is not a fur friendly predator round. Over the years I have settled on the Sierra #1365 55 gr. SBT in my 22-250. Stay away from the plastic tipped bullets unless you always make perfect shots. If you want to use a plastic tipped bullet, the 50 gr. BT's seem to do the best in the 22-250. They are a bit stouter than the V-Max, etc. Bob There is room for all of God's creatures....right next to the mashed potatoes. http://texaspredatorposse.ipbhost.com/

We tried the Barnes Varmit Grenades in the .223 and .22-250 and were very unimpressed. Only one hit exactly broadside between ribs dropped with no pelt damage. We took three others with .223 & 36gr fairly close and each needed more than one hole. The second one with the .22-250 had a huge hole in the on-side and no exit. The .243 with 60gr. worked better. But still would have meant sewing. Some damage was due to hit location, but even the nice hits left me glad we wern't saving fur. Just my findings.

Nothing that I ever used was what you could really call "fur-friendly" on critters using a 22-250 caliber. I have used solids but still causes problems. I dropped down to the .222 Remington to solve my fur problem. I also kept the velocity down in my handloads too.

I searched for awhile, slowed the velocity down to 3000fps- then bought a 222.

When I lived in the lower 48 I shot truckloads of coytes with a 220 Swift and the 52 grain Speer hollowpoints that BigNate mentioned. That was far and away the best load I had with the least amount of fur damage. A friend tried the same bullet in the 223 and got significant damage. I believe the Swift's higher velocity made the difference in the frangibility of the bullet and the lack of fur damage. I am also certain that the same load would absolutley take a fox or bobcat apart. The coyote is enough bigger that the 52grain/Swift combo worked great. Personally I would look at the 222 or the 17 Remington. I have used both on coyotes, never on fox or bobcat, but seeing them both used on coyotes makes me believe they would both be much better than the 22-250 on either. "...I advise the gun. I now use a .17 HMR w/17 gr bullets. No exit hole. Total devastation inside. Hard to find varmint bullets that don't leave a bad exit hole. Not only a hole but tissue disruption bruises the skin and this can cause hair slippage during tanning.
