Anyone used their 270 as their coyote hunting gun? I am trying to find a good load/info for my new Savage in .270.

I used one back in the 80s for summer calling -- when pelts weren't worth a plugged nickel -- and stuck with my conventional "deer" load: 57.7 grains IMR-4831 under the Speer 130 grain BTSP.

Yeah Bobby, I was thinking of just shooting the green box 130gr Core Lokts and not even thinking of reloading for it.

But on the other hand the Speer/Sierra 90gr-110gr Varminter / HP bullets sound interesting...with their expansion

Yes, there are definitely some lightweights out there that would make things interesting on a coyote. Back when I was shooting a .270 WCF, the 90 grain Sierra Varminter was an absolute bomb on anything inside 250 yards and still maintains that reputation today. Its accuracy was also top-notch, too. If I recall correctly, I only shot 1 or 2 coyotes with it but popped a number of 'coons and a few feral dogs as well. The terminal effects were devastating.

But for sake of simplicity, i went back to the 130 grain load and just used it year-round.

If you are shooting coyotes with a .270, then you obviously are not concerned about pelts. Unless you just want to play with the loads a little, I would say just shoot your deer load. If you want to speed it up, then heat up the light bullets and watch the fur fly!

90 HP and 110 grain SP Sierras
100 grain HP Hornady...

throttle down the HPs and they actually make a very good low velocity deer bullet...

i use the 270 for coyotes all the time but only if im not going out for pelts during the spring/summer because i do sell coyotes pelts my last 2 pelts o sold for 95$ and 104 respectivly when handled right and if there nice and prime here in canada they can bring this price easy. id say the adverage tho is 50-75$ per pelt during fall winter

if im trying to save pelts i hunt them with a 22 mag and just take head shots under 125 yards using the hornady 30g v max or ill use a heavyer 45-50 grain jacketed flat point ect.... 22 mag kills extreamly clean under 100 yards even on 40/60 pound coyotes on heart shots they might run a few yards but they are running dead.

I shot the Hornady 100-grain spire points in front of 62 grains of IMR 4831 for a while. Right at 3300fps out of my rifle with no pressure signs, and very accurate...

iv also shot a shot a number of coyotes with a 130 grain nosler accubond and man i love that bullet still opens up fast but hold together much better i use the accubond for deer,coyotes and other small to med game shot a few bears with it but ill stick to my bows or biggers guns for that works much better

I was thinking ballistic tip as well. I've had good luck with the nosler line of bullets

I tired 110gr VMAX but in my .270 for coyotes but couldn't get them to shoot. I was using H4831SC and think I should have tried a different powder. Instead I just bought a new gun

Many years ago I tried the lighter Speer and Hornady bullets and wasn't very happy with accuracy. Although not a good choice for coyotes, the only lighter bullet I got to shoot consistently to my satisfaction was the 110 TSX.

Admittedly, I chose not to spend a lot of time on the Speer and Hornady bullets. I did load a bunch of them with IMR4064 which were very flat shooting (no chronograph at the time) but groups at 200 yards were around 4-5"

btw smallest bullet i will shoot in a 270 is a 130 they shoot the best and they carry good down range ballistics and alot of punch. exp with the amount of wolves up here its nice having the added go to power.

Years ago I shot a lot of the 90 and 110 Sierras, they shot very well out of my old rifle. Expect big holes in the hide though. These days the rifle just gets deer and elk loads, I finally bought smaller guns for varmints.
