I've got a Remington XP-100 in .221FB and am seriously considering getting a Cooper in that caliber, with both being used for Ohio chucks and out-of-state PDs. How good a job has the cartridge done for you?

I am in the flatlands in the NW corner which is reasonably populated. I find that very few shots are 300 yards or more.
I have a XP-100 as well as a 700 classic in 221 Fireball. Both guns sholot very well and seem to like the 37gr Calhoun bullets which really open up a woodchuck.

I have two custom .221's, one on a Sako L461 and one on a Mini Mark X. Both of them are ringers. The MMX likes 40- grain Nosler B.Tips while the Sako likes 40 grain Hornady V-Max, both at between 3350 and 3400 fps. AA-2200 and AA-1680 are my best powders for this caliber.

I find that this caliber and bullet combination is about as effective as the larger .22 Centerfires up to around 300 yards. The small powder charge heats the barrel more slowly, allowing you to make more consecutive shots before the barrel gets uncomfortably hot. Low recoil and slightly less noise are other benefits.

I began using the .17 HMR a few years ago and I've been extremely impressed with the effect on Ground Hogs as we call them in the south. Mind you, my ranges are close, 25-40 yards as they are in my backyard along the riverbank. But stone dead is an understatement. I buy OTC Hornady's in the 17 grain "ballistic tip." Shot some crows and squirrels with it as well. A lot of fun to shoot.

My concern w/ using the XP-100 w/ its sub 11" barrel might be that it's too weak for Ohio groundhogs.

Am working up a load using Hornady 40gr Vmax bullets. I am trying to hit 3000fps, but don't think it will happen. Groundhogs in my area are big and tough; I hate to see them take a solid body hit and run into their holes to die. Am experimenting w/ H110 and 4227. Anyone here use either powder?

No worries about the velocity loss from a short barrel if you are using a good varmint bullet. The old Hornady SPSX are great under 300 yards
