you have to has broadband to use it
DSL comes with a phoneline/number/you are charged for it - at least nearly everywhere else in the world

this is only VoIP, and works great- same as vonage and 20 other technologies

opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club

Whats a VoIP??

I dont know squat about what "vonage" is etc.

I have verizon home service and thats all I can get where I live. Its a Damn rip off ($85++ a month for a phone line( that I dont use) and internet service sucks

I could use that money on gun stuff, getting blanks turned etc.

I dont even use my home phone line( just telemarketer calls) except I thought I needed it for the internet. So this is news to me

Calling Verizon to get any infomation is a joke . I talked to probably 10 different people today trying to get info about canceling my phone line and just haveing the internet sevice. Talked to 10 people that can barely speak english and cant even understand what they say, f*** that

Next time I see a service truck i will ask him for info.

Idiots at verizon told me I have to cancel both the phone line and internet DSL and then reactivate the internet DSL and they said internet will cost more then. What the f***? Mad

You now pay less for your DSL because it is bundled in a package w/telephone service. Once you "unbundle", then the discount you were getting on your DSL is lost. It is a bit like buying a travel package of airfare, hotel and auto rental. You pay less if you get the package. You will pay more for any single one of them.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a digital technology going over the internet versus the analog signal going over your telephone line.

I have not used MagicJack altho apparently your computer has to be running to use it.

I use Skype both through my computer (with headset and microphone). But I also bought the Net Gear extension handsets which run off my router (not my PC) so I can still use Skype even when PC is not running. (Presumably ditto for your DSL router/modem).

Skype is kinda fun in that when you call an 800 # they can't log your real telephone number, so you don't get annoying callbacks.

finally, I kept my Verizon service but reduced it just to local calls so my bill is about 1/4 of what it used to be. I can use my Skype handsets for either Skype or Verizon calls; and obviously use my old telphone handsets for local calls as before. I don't know if MagicJack has 911 capability. If not, Verizon local service might remain important for you.

I have Magic Jack.
It works just like a regular phone except that it won't ring if the computer is off. Has voice mail for calls when you are off line.
DSL is needed to operate.
They are running a $60.00 for 5 years special.

Downside- The Magic Jack interface will pop up at the beginning and end of each call.

I got a Magic Jack for Christmas. Hooked it up. You have to pick your own phone number. I could not pick an Alaska area code (907), not available, so I picked one from Washington (509). My mother in law lives 8 miles from us. She got her first phone bill and it was over $100. All her calls to us were billed as a long distance call from 907 to 509.
Has anyone else had that problem?

That is probably considered off shore/out of country.

I have a local only number and only use Magic Jack for out of area calls.

I found out, to have interbet service with no phone service with my current internet provider which is Verizon, it would be $37 per month. Thats with what they call a dry line price. Thats too much

Originaly my verizon internet was just $17 per month, then they raised it to $21.99 per month plus the phone bill

Well I got verizon to change my phone/internet service to a total of $48.00 from $71.00

Im going to try and search for a cheaper internet service with no phone service

Anyone know how to shop for a internet service for a paticular area?

I am hopeing for less that $20 for internet, no phone service

Free WiFi in Safeway. There's a guy locally who lives on his boat, uses the Safeway WiFi and Magic Jack, has turned the deli section into his business office.

Safeway is fine with this. We put up with it.
