Watched "Heart Break Ridge" the other night. The one with Clint Eastwood as a Gunny in a Recon Squad.
Did they really make you wear those GAY shorts to run in?
Good grief!

brad may,

Please continue to believe everything you see and hear coming out of Hollywood.

The movie in question was a series of errors from the moment it was proposed. Not the least of which is the title, as there were no Marines at the battle known as Heart Break Ridge; it was solely an army operation. Apparently no one associated with this movie realized that until after it was "in the can" and they began getting feedback from Korean War vets, both army and Marines. They then had to go back and shoot that ridiculous explanation scene to insert into the movie.

About the only thing the movie got right was that the Marines basically ran around that little island, killing commies as they were trained to do, and rescuing the medical students while the army was bogged down at the airport. There were almost as many problems with that military operation on Grenada as there were with the movie production. The military problems were so severe that they resulted in major policy changes by DoD and all branches of the U.S. military. Not one of Clint's better movies.

And just for future reference, only other Marines get to call us Jar Heads to our faces.

Take your choice between SNAFU and cluster fuck.
Either would be appropriate.

when i was in, the office pogues wore the "pussy" shorts.
the REAL marines wore boots cammies and a t-shirt to run in.
at subic bay we wore this and flack jackets and helmets.
it was 7 miles to the top of the mountain, and the monkeys had learned to throw rocks, cuz we threw rocks at the monkeys.
no bs here, i've seen marines run like screaming school girls when the monkeys attacked

Ah, no, we did not wear shorts like that. We did run a hell-of-a-lot, though.

I need to look at it again to see those shorts. Its a movie and its entertainment - that is why I do not ussually watch war movies - too many inaccuracies.

I did watch it once becasue I was in that unit and lived in the quanset huts at Camp Talega.

Ravenr, the mountain you where talking about was it it the "the seven (eight) stairs to heaven?

Oh, I'll admit those monkey scared the shit out of me at night.

Thank God you guys never wore those shorts.
The only part of the movie that pissed me off was the way they portrayed Clint's platoon as a bunch of screwup's before he arrived.
It's been over 40 years since I had any dealings with any one in Recon, but I know God damn well, no one in Recon was ever a screwup!
Except for ARVN Rangers, they were the most hard to the core hands I ever ran across.

we were bunked at the "lower MAU camp"
it set on the beach at the bottom of a mountain
and the windy twisted road lead to a navy compound about 7-8? miles in between.
we ran up and down this mt.
3 times a week, in full gear, combat boots,
cammie trousers,t- shirt, flak jacket and helmet.
the protective gear was needed, legend told
because the "grunts" (infantry) who humped the mt. had thrown rocks at the troops of monkeys
who lived along the road so long the monkeys learned to throw them back.
i was sceptical until i ran the mt. the 1st time
from then on i was a believer!
we called them "rock apes and they could THROW a rock.

Ah no, you might have us confused with another branch of the military. We ran in "boots 'n utes" more often then not!
