Here is what is claimed for Pedersoli 50-90 2.5" and 50-70 1.75" barrel Specs, same for both: .504" bore/lands .512" groove, 6-groove 1:26" twist Sumbuddy who know Shiloh Sharps barrel specs for the 50-90 Sharps 2.5" and the 50-70 Govt.? Pedersoli used to offer the "Sharps M1874 Long Range Target Rifle" in 50-70 and 50-90, but it is not currently listed in that caliber on their web site: Shiloh Sharps "1874 Long Range Express":

IIRC they are 500/508 with a 1-26 twist. A 1-36 twist is available on special order. A friend of mine has one with the fast twist, and it takes a 750 grain bullet for it to really come in to its own. I have a 50-90 with a 1-26 twist and it flat out won't shoot a bullet of less than 650 grains in weight. You will be a lot happier with a good 45.

Thanks guys. One question leads to another: For a "good 45" which chambering would be best in a Shiloh 1874 Long Range Express? Shiloh offerings: 45/-70-90-100-110-120 45-70 or 45-90 for targets? 45-100 is good for what? 45-110 or 45-120 for 200-yard hunting? Looks like the 1874 Montana Rough Rider is very similar to the 1874 Long Range Express, except the former has a 30" barrel and no cheek rest instead of 34" with cheek rest. Both rifles have pistol grip and close to zero drop from nose to heel, comb near parallel to bore. And either can be had with ebony (Schnabble or round) or pewter (Hartford style) forearm tip. And standard cheekpiece or cheekpiece with accent line are options on both rifles. But barrel length and weights are surely optional too. So no difference after options are applied to the standard model packages?

If you want to hunt, don't even consider a Long Range Express. The 34 inch barrel is a real PITA to hunt with, and the rifle comes without barrel sights. Your best bet for a do everything rifle is a Number One Sporter or a Roughrider with a Number 1 Heavy 30 inch barrel in 45-70. If you just have to have a longer case for the cool factor, get a 45-90. Loaded correcetly, the 45-70 has no trouble reaching 1000 yards, and kills anything on the planet with the right bullets. The larger capacity cases are often difficult to get really good accuracy from, cost more to shoot, and won't out penetrate a 45-70. The larger cases DO offer more recoil. If you have a 40-65 and a 45-70, you really can handle anything that you may need to. An elk broadside at 400 yards is a gimme with a 45-70 Sharps.

Just remembered this on the shelf: From Pacific tool & Gauge, Dave Kiff's book, "The Gunsmiths Book of Chamber Prints" lists these bore and groove specs: 50-70 Govt.: .500/.510 (historic original was 0.500/.515) 50-70 Shiloh: .500/.508 50/90 STR 2-1/2 Shiloh: .4995/.509 50-110 Express: .500/.512 50/140 Sharps 3-1/4: .500/.509 50/140 Sharps/Shiloh: .500/.509 Just a wee bit squirrely when all authorities are considered. I shall move on, back to 45-70 Govt.

OK Sharpsguy I have sent private messages to you and no REPLY'S WHERE DID YOU LEARN THAT A SHOLOH SHARPS BARREL OR ANY OTHER IS TIGHTER AT THE MUZZLE 4" OR MORE ? Don't take the chip !

Concho--I never received your private message. Kirk Bryan at Shiloh told me that Shiloh barrels have a slight taper choke starting about 4 inches from the muzzle. Run a tight patch through one, and you can definitely feel it. Grease a bullet and run it from breech to muzzle, and you can feel it this way, too. Likewise with the Pedersoli barrels. They are also choked. My Green Mountain barrels do not show any choke at the muzzle.

It lives! ... the forum. For the 50/90 Pedersoli: I have a .512/650gr Hoch mould now, handles on backorder, though I can grind an RCBS set of handles to work ... Starline 50/90 Sharps 2.5" brass is not available anywhere ... backorder blues again ... And finally, regarding the potmetal rear sight saddle on the McNelly Sharps 1859 percussion conversion replica 50/70 Govt., from Taylor's/Armi Sport: Thanks to sharpsguy, I got a short Lawrence Ladder carbine sight from Shiloh, and Rusty McGee Gunsmith fabricated a new saddle from scratch, to fit the huge dovetail on the McNelly. It is rock solid now. Has True Grit. I might be able to get it sighted in now. It shot like this when the potmetal rear sight saddle was patched with JB Weld: Worth salvaging.
