For plinking I use the .411 300gr Hornady bullets made for the 405 Win. Use the same powder and charge that you use for the full 400gr load.

The Hornady 210 Grain XTP pistol bullet for the .41 mag pistol is also a good one. You can load it down to .41 mag velocities and up well above 2000 fps as desired; the lower velocities have less recoil and are more pleasant to shoot than the 300 grain Hornadys which have been discontinued for now.
You can also order the 210 grain cast bullets from Penn Bullets ( http://www.pennbullets.com/41/41-caliber.html )
and save even more $$. Smiler

That is the 75% Rule.

That method has worked great in several different 450/400 double rifles. tu2

Your velocity should be around 2250 to 2300fps or so, about the same as the 405 Winchester.

Kills pigs, deer, etc. like the Hammer of Thor...

If you want a lighter hunting/plinking load, take the 41 Mag bullets and load them over IMR 4198.

These loads were invented for Black Poweder Express rifles, to duplicate the old original Nitro For Black loads.

Start with 44gr of IMR 4198, and work up till they regulate and hit with the sights at 50 yards.

WARNING!!!, WARNING!!! YOU MUST USE DACRON FILLER WITH THIS LOAD!!!

THE DACRON MUST BE COMPRESSED BETWEEN THE POWDER AND THE BULLET.

Usually this is around 12 grains of Dacron in the 450/400.

The Dacron does not melt in the barrel, it does not even char.

I have shot several hundred of these loads in double rifles with no problems.

Velocity will be around 1700fps.

FWIW, shooting a 200-220 grain handgun bullet in a double rifle regulated for 400-grain bullets at about 2100 is going to result in point of impact being well off the target. If one is plinking just for the joy of shooting that may be acceptable, but it appears to me one is far better off shooting the original weight bullets.

But I could be wrong...

In my 450/400 3 1/4" double rifle, the 210 Sierra 41 mag bullet hits to the sights at 50 yards and shoots a group smaller than the palm of my hand.
The load is 44gr of IMR 4198, with 12 grains of Dacron filler.

In my 450 No2 double rifle it shoots spot on with the 300gr Remington HP [for the 45/70], with 52gr of IMR 4198, and 15 gr of Dacron.
Velocity is 1878fps.

These are both Nitro for Black type loads pressure wise. They are very accurate and have very mild recoil.
