Help needed for .416 Rigby loads!

I need some help developing a couple of loads for my new .416 Rigby. The rifle is a CZ550 and is strictly for buffalo. I really want to shoot the 350 grain Barnes TSX and Banded Solid bullets. I've not completely ruled out the 400 grainers yet. I've experimented with H4350 & H4831 so far but I'm not real pleased. What powders and charge weights have any of you experimented with?

Seems like the no brainer load is 100-104 gr H4831(SC)+any decent 400 gr bullet.the 104 gr load shoots in the.4"3 shots in my RSM.

KimR,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add that load to my next round of tests. thumb

I've never used the short-cut powder but now I have a reason to do so.

104-105 grains of H4831 works best in mine as well. I have loaded the banded solids and mostly North Fork 370's but I'm rapidly running out of them.

This thread has got Barnes reload data in it, I found IMR4831 worked well in my 416 Rigby but that might have been 'cause I had several tins of it. Wink I never worked up any 350 grain loads so can't help in that respect.

Thanks guys. Looks like I need to pick up some more IMR4831 & H4831 and possibly a couple bottles of Advil. I can feel some shoulder pain coming on! Wink

Just shoot a few rounds every trip and go to the range a lot. That will prevent a serious sore shoulder and the resulting flinch. The Rigby is one of those big bores that often thinks it's a varmint rifle when you shoot groups.

I have found that 95 grains of IMR 4350 with the 350-grain Speer Mag Tip or the Barnes TSX of the same weight is very accurate in my CZ. I have not chronographed this load, but it is pretty mild, and does not break your shouldewr-recoils like a .375 H&H.

In addition, using the RCBS 350-grain cast gascheck heat-treated to Brinell 21 and sized .417" shoots very well using 125 grains of AA8700 or equivalent. The MV is 2200 FPS. This load is an ideal "solid" at that velocity for use on lkarge, thin-skinned game. A .416" bullet doesn't need to expand to do a lot of damage when it hits bone!!!

I used 98.0 gr of IMR 4350 on Norma cases with FED 215 primers and 350 gr Barnes X bullets. Chrono'd at 2700 fps from a CZ550 Safari Mag rifle. Great accuracy with better recoil than 400 grainers.

Have taken Gemsbock, Hartebeast, Bison and a Cape Buffalo with it. The bullet is deadly with good expansion and awesome penetration.
