Ted you are all over it already.
My sons .243 shoots 100 grain Sierra's with 41 grains of IMR-4350, 85 grain Barnes with 43 grains and 60 grain Sierra hollow points with 46 grains ( all with IMR-4350, CCI primers and WW cases ). All of the above loads are very accurate in his Win M70 Lightweight Carbine (20"barrel).

42 gr 4350 or H414, whichever shoots best with a 100 Hornady is hard to beat.

I use two different loads in my 243. For game: Hornady 100 BTSP, 48.5 H450, CCI200, 3150 fps and 1" groups from my Dakota Alpine 22' barrel. For varmints: Hornady 75 HP, 49.0 IMR4831, CCI200, 3400 fps and 7/8" groups in the same rifle. Using Winchester brass.

My favorite in .243 is a 70 grain MatchKing over 46 grains of IMR 4831. Very accurate.

For those into the exotic components.

My load is 85 gr. Nosler Partition with 47.5 grs of VV N-560 in RWS brass with WLR primers. Plunks three shots into one enlarged bullet hole - every time.

Gotta admit that prior to using the VV Powders I burned a whole lot of H-4350 & IMR-4350 in this cartridge though.

VV powder is good stuff

I have used 44 gr of H4350 with a 100 gr hornady Sp interlock for everything out of my Mod 70. Reminder don't try this load in your rifle. Ron

RELOADER 22 HAS BEEN BEST FOLLOWED BY IMR4895.

i use varget...

33.5 grains under a 95-grain nosler ballistic tip

and

41.0 with a 60-grain Sierra hollowpoint.

I have been partial to the old Winchester WMR powder at about 44.0 grains and 100 gr. Sierra boattail.

Winchester cases, CCi LR Mag, 105 grain Speer, 39.5 grains of IMR 4350.

A max load of H4831 and 85 grain Barnes TSX in Nosler custom brass with CCI-BR2 primers gave me 2 of the biggest mule deer I've ever seen (during hunting season) in 2006 and 2007 at 385 and 380 yards. I consistently get 3240 FPS.

I load 35 gr of varget and 90gr speer hot core for my brother. I seen him shoot 3 big 4 pt mulies at distances from 200 the farthest was 310. All pass throughs, still playing with 95 nosler ballistic tips, 100 partition and gamekings

I get half-inch groups from my Tikka with a max load of Varget under a 75-gr V-Max.

I use H380 x 40 gns pushing a Hornady 87gnHptBt with a Federal mag primer. Does the job every time.

38.0gr Varget under a 75gr Hornaday Vmax is the most accurate load I've found so far in my Browning Abolt, and it hammers coyotes very nicely.

My favourite load in the steyer prohunter is rws brass/ 105grn speer or other similar weighted projectile over 45-47 grns 4350. I havent used it for anything butt culling sheep and pigs. We ususally take out 500 to 700 at a time over a day and a half. Good bullet placement counts as always but this load is good up close in the thick stuff or out to about 350 yrds. Little recoil and accuarate as hell.

I shoot 44.5grs imr 4831 with a sierra 85gr bthp. shot it in 4 different 700s. one hole.

I took my very first two Red Hinds with a Sako .243W shooting a 100gn soft point Rem solid base over H 4895 33gns, also tried Benchmark with 60gn hollow points on vermin, pretty good medicine, still wish I kept that rifle

Any loads for 4064 or Varget for the Barnes 85 gr tsx?

I load for several peoples 243s and H414 up to 85 grain bullets is magic and I light all my Large rifles with 215 primers. We have a tendacey for cold deer seasons and loads worked up with mag primers seem more consistant from November to June.

If you want it to go fast you should go IMR 4350 - Hodgdon H4831SC - Alliant RL22 I use Norma MRP for TSX and got 975 m/s ~ 3200 f/s with good accuracy.
The best game kill bullet I ever tried for 243w

Jammed into the lands, 43 gr H4350 100 gr moly is at the limit of long brass life, and measures 2975 fps 24" barrel.

This load is good for killing ruminants.


Jammed into the lands, 40 gr IMR4895 65 gr Vmax moly is a wimpy load, and measures 3500 fps.

This loads is good for killing rodents and making small groups to brag about.

Rem 700v loves this one
85gr hpbt sierra - 41.5gr - I4350

The mannlicher loves this one.
100 SP - 40.5gr - I4350 -

Greymists Varmint load of 47.1 gr of W760 behind the Hornady 58gr V-MAX in my Krico .243

My ld is 45.5gr H4350, WLR primer, Hdy 75gy HP. Absolutely deadly on prairie pups and hold sub min of angle in my old Mod 70 Varmit and my new Savage 112.

just got a tikka in .243 first loads i tried ar 5 shots .25 group 31 grains varget behind sierra spitzer boat tail 100 gr seated to 2.65 .10 off the lands

45.5gns RL-15, 58gn v-max, cci-250 primer put up in lapua brass gives 4000fps, from a 26' barrel. and does a real number on crows and coyote's.

I use Varget under a 75 gr V-Max. I plan to work up a load with the 85 gr TSX next.

37.5 grains 2208/Varget under the Nosler 70 BT for a very accurate load. R-P brass and any primer will do.

My M70 Classic Fwt. really likes a stiff load of Varget and the 70gr. TNT. For deer hunting, 43-H4350 with either the 95 Partition or the 100 Hornady gets the job done.

If you own a 243 Winchester, do your own loading and have one that will not shoot 41.0 grains of VARGET behind a 70 grain NOSLER BT to the best accuracy out of the rifle you've seen................... trade it away!! 36.0 grains of IMR 3031 and 75 grain SpeerHP falls into this category also. BT!DT! GHD

You're in the ballpark man. Been shooting .243 for years target and N. Michigan Whitetail. I've never used anything other than Barnes 95g X bullets and don't think you need anything bigger for whitetail to tell the truth. I use from 39-41 grains IMR 4350 and get excellent accuracy from this load. Wife's chamber on her Ruger Ultralight .243 is a bit sloppy so I NSO and tone down the load a bit, my Ruger Varmint will shoot about anything I can get in the chamber. IMR (or Hodgdon....) 4350 has proven to me to be the best choice for this round.

I've got loading manuals dating back to the 70's when I started reloading and it never ceases to amaze me how the newer manuals keep getting more and more conservative on powder..........

Barnes 85gr TSX over 38.5grs Varget gets me about 3375fps and great accuracy.

Art -- I too have a Win 243 in a Ruger M77UL. I'm using IMR4350 with 100gr Hornady's and have recently purchased some 90gr Nosler B-Tips to try.

What kind of groups do you get from her M77UL?

That rifle gets sub-moa groups at 100 yds IF you are a good enough shooter to do that. When I say that the chamber is a bit sloppy what I mean it that in a rifle you have gauges to measure the chamber: a "go" gauge, a "no-go" gauge, and a "field" gauge. Several years ago I was foolishly trying to pump all the speed I could out of her RL using max loads and ran into some pressure signs so I immediately stopped using the load. I eroded (evidently) the chamber somewhat and after that the bolt would close on the "no-go" gauge but was OK on the "field" gauge. What I do (I know I'm gonna have to send it to Ruger to have the barrel set back a turn eventually...) is to use ONLY brass that have been previously fired from that gun (takes the chamber shape of that gun..) and then NSO (neck size only...) the brass. Currently I'm using the 95g X bullet over 39 grains of IMR 4350. No pressure sign and no doubt it whacks the deer too.

.......and no for anyone who might want to critisize this the brass is never above the max case length of 2.045 after it is fired.

I paid $350 for this rifle in 1986 and would LOVE to buy myself one but dang these things are like $700 rifles now. I love my M77VT but at 10 lbs it gets awful heavy at the end of a day where as she can carry the ultra light all day long.

I've used 47 grains of Reloader 22, with the 100 grain Core-Lokt Remington and it goes 3050fps and shoots MOA. Kills deer, pigs and goats like nothing else from a 243.

Only suggestion I have is you work up very carefully as Reloader 22 can be variable between batches. I have 10 lbs that I'm working with but my load is 1.5 grains above the current Alliant listed load.

Perfectly safe in my rifle, Rem brass is on it's 5th load and I can't measure any case head expansion.....
