Not necesarily. When the rifle was made only BP was available. I don't know the numbers but the BP barrels could possibly be reproofed to the nitro cartridge. A lot of BP rifles have been.

Just dreaming out loud. Smiler

If it's a gun that you deeply desier, it would be an investment in your happiness. Nothing matters more than that.

Good hunting!

I see a double as a "life investment", ie use it for life and leave it to your kids one day to also hopefully hunt buffalo and elephant with.

Same as wine, for drinking and enjoying, not re-selling for a profit. Of course some wise persons buy two cases and sell the second later to pay for the first and get the vintage for nil. Smiler

Of course if one oneday is desparate for funds it would be nice for a double to realise a profit on it.

I can think of many much better ways to make a good return on capital.

In many ways its better than the stock market and certainly less risk...Lately I have stayed away from the high end, high return English double guns as they have a limited market and are hard to turn, whereas a nice Army Navy double for instance or a English bolt rifle in big bore will sell in a heartbeat..

The supply is limited and the demand is high so thats a good combination for profit..

However you must know the market and know double rifles and for my part I am in constant contact with those folks that like these type of guns due to my business and I am sure thats been a plus for me.

What about an oddball like the CZ 589 O/U double in 458 Win? They were offered at $2999 in 2002 and only 5 were ever produced and sold. They are very well made, but on the ugly side. Will rarity alone made these valuable? If one could get one for $5000, AND have fun with it, is there any change they might go to $15K or so in 10 years?

Sabot,

If you pay $5K for the CZ double, then I will personally pay for your mental health treatment, because you will have proven that you are crazy!!!

The doubles with good potential to increase in value are the top brands in excellent condition and desirable calibers.

CZ in .458? Nope!! I saw a Ferlach best quality O/U .458 that would probably cost in the range of $30K to $40K to duplicate today. But the seller was having trouble getting $6500. Why? 1.) Over/under. 2.) .458 win mag. 3.) Not a top name (it was a guild gun).

500 Grains. What do you mean by guild gun. Built by apprentices? Subbed out? While not "traditional" it would seem to me to be a useful gun, especially if converted to a Lott.

Guild gun means several guys from different shops in Ferlach, Austria worked on it. If converted to 458 Lott, the gun would need to be re-regulated which could cost $1.5K to $3K. Then the rifle would probably last 50 shots or so before stretching beyond repair. The Lott is not a suitable caliber for doubles. Neither is the 458 win mag. Just get one in 450 NE or 470 NE and it will cause no trouble.
