You will still have more than enough penetration with a reduced velocity of 2,300 fps.

My question: since I believe the 500 NE has a good reputation as an elephant stopper, can I throttle my 500 Jeffery down to 2300 fps and still be pretty confident that penetration will be more than adequate if I use Barnes Banded solids where solids are required (elephant) and TSX's where they're not (cape buffalo first shot, Alaskan brown bear), or should I stick with my 2400 fps load which shoots as well but comes back a bit quicker recoil wise...

Chuck

just go to Michael458`s Terminal bullet performance thread.. at 2200 fps with the 570 grs .510" you will have more than needed, dont worry about PI - it will not give an accurate estimate in game anyway, look what I wrote before..

Thanks all, that's what I figured, but I wanted to ask those of you have real world experience with elephant and buffalo.

Best Regards,

Chuck

Chuck

You can throttle your 500 Jeff right on down if so desired with the 570 Barnes Banded and accomplish any mission you will ever ask of it right on up to T'Rex and probably beyond. See below

Buffalo

Yes, I thought it might be. I have been watching, but no need to get into the SD debate as I don't see SD as very important these days. It's all nose profile and size of the meplat first and foremost above everything else. And with todays non conventional expanding bullets that throws SD to the winds.

Yessirree, ready for T.rex!
Barnes seems to have got that one right!

My .510-cal./570-grain GSC FN copper solids impacted a Bison at about 2300 fps and went from stern to stem ... about 8 feet of bison ... repeatably:

First shot while live and on its feet: Texas Heart Shot
Second shot while dead on the ground: Texas Test Shot

Both shots went into the southside rump and came out of the northside neck, and may still be in orbit.

I have hopes the .510-cal./535-grain brass FN from S&H will do as well or even better, on straight line.

I use a 1:10" twist. It does not hurt penetration.

I do believe CZ used 1:10" McGowen barrels on both the .505 Gibbs and the 500 Jeffery.
That is a good thing.

RIP

It seems that Barnes got a lot of things right, every banded solid I have ever worked with either in the field or in the tests, with the great exception of one, the 9.3 Barnes Banded. Mike had great tests with the 375 caliber Banded. Even the 250 gr 338 caliber was fantastic.

The S&H 535 is fantastic bullet, but it needs more velocity than I ran it at to get the deepest penetration because of it's 75% meplat. What it will do is hit with more authority because of that meplat, and there is no chance of it going off course in anything. I am sure T'Rex would be in serious trouble trying to choke one of those down. And yes, 1:10 will do fine of course! But with that meplat it could be a smooth bore and results would be incredible!

Thanks again guys! The 570g TSX and Banded Solids at 2300 fps are a little easier on the shoulder and they both group under an inch at 100 yards (3 shot groups) and shoot to within 1/2 inch of each other so I guess I'm set.

Saving my pennies and dreaming of Africa ...

Thanks again,

Chuck
