Seen numerous posts on which actions are considered the best, but haven't really seen much on custom stocks.

If one were to build a custom DGR, who would you have build the stock?

Synthetic?.....wood?.....

Is grade of wood important?

This question needs to be narrowed down a lot.

If synthetic was the desire I'd like a McMillan and glass bed it to the barreled action.

If wood is the wish.....I'd dig out an appropriate piece of Bastogne and send it to Jim Kobe......that is assuming I wasn't going to do much of it myself.

Go to some of the trade shows and see the work folks are doing.

There's a quite a few good stock makers out there.

Depends on whether you are building a big bore or regular, as the requirements for the stock are different and different guys specialize in each type. Also depends on whether you want traditional English, pre-War Mauser style, classic M70 style, etc. because there are different people who would be best for each. Can you let us know a bit more of what you are looking for?

This would be a project for a big bore bolt action DGR (.416 or larger) on a granite mountain action.

Traditional Wood stock is my preference. I'd like a nice piece of wood, but it's not going to be a safe queen.

I agree, if I was going the synthetic route I'd look at McMillan, or better yet just get another Echols stock.

FOsteology,

Get both a synthetic and a wood stock. You might want to hunt Alaska with that rifle someday.

GeorgeS,

Good suggestion. Waffen. Hein is currently building me a 9.3x62 utilizing D'Arcy Echols stock. I also have a .375H&H and a 30-06 setup for Alaska and Canada.

As Vapodog noted, we're blessed to have a wide selection of really good stockmakers to choose from including several that are active right here on this forum. My only advice would be to handle and look over as many DGRs as you can before you make a decision. There are subtle differences in the way different makers handle styling and geometry. You owe it to yourself to make the trip out to Reno and find out what piques your interest.

If you like GMA actions and wood stocks, there are some good photos on this thread over on 24 hr Campfire. It's a series of work-in-progress photos of the building of a 416 Rigby.
