Hi all, I've currently got a 375 H&H (10.25 lbs with scope) and plan to rebarrel it to a 470 Capstick (it will be about 12 lbs with scope). I'm 58 years old, is there anything for me to be concerned about with respect to retina detachment from the increased recoil? My 375 feels almost like a 300 Win Mag, very light recoil right now. I probably will only load the 470 Capstick to 470 NE velocities (500g at 2150 fps). I've never had any issues with my eyes.

Thanks much,

Chuck

Regards,

Chuck

A 12 lb Capstick @ 2150, will be a popgun, recoil wise.

As for retina detachment, I talked to an eye surgen about that. His answer, bad DNA, not recoil, is the most likely factor.

HK is correct, the risk factors are previous eye injury, previous eye surgery and extreme nearsightedness. Here is a pretty good resource for eye info:

I have a repaired retinal tear. I ask the doctor who diagnosed the tear and repaired it with a laser if it was due to my shooting my big bore rifles. Even after a yearly check up last week his answer to my question was, "No, it's not the rifles or the recoil. It is most likely, too many birthdays!" I'll be 62 in December. Still shooting my 450/400 3 inch, 404 Jeffery and my little kicker the 9.3X74R Chapuis!
Now if I could just get rid of this little feathery wiper in my left eye. . . . .

Chuck,

I’m 55, have some eye problems and have asked my eye doctor the same thing. His opinion has been that it shouldn’t be a problem. And I shoot my current 9 lbs. 3 oz. Dakota M76 Safari in .375 H&H a good bit, and in the past have hunted elk repeatedly with a 9 lbs 10 oz. Winchester M70 African in .458 Winchester Magnum.

Hey, are you a member of SCI in Colorado Springs?

Thanks all, I'm not a worry wort, but you can't shoot what you can't see. My concerns are alleviated. And a 12lb 470 Capstick should still be a bit of a pussycat with regards to recoil.

Thanks again,
Chuck

A good friend of mine has a detached retina that has been blamed on a lifetime of shooting hard kicking rifles. It happened when he was in his 50's,shooting a 338.

I'm 68 and have a "floater" in my shooting eye but regularly shoot a .416 Rigby, .404 Jeffrey and a .458 WinMag. No problems with the eyes, yet.
