I did a search but came up empty. Wondering which Mauser action is the best for a custom big bore in the 416 Taylor range. Might make a 9.3 just haven't decided. Don't need another rifle but want to put another custom together just to try my skills. There are so many different models of the 98 and I'm no Mauser expert. I've built on a 1909 Argentine action before and had good luck. I've heard talk of the vz24 and the DVM's but just don't know which model is the best or easiest to work with. Suggestions are welcome and thank you.--------Pegleg

Either find a VZ-24 or a post war commercial.

Buy this and put pigskin (Anglostyle) or goatskin (Eurostyle) covered pad on it:
The Bruiser
This thing has a lot going for it:
1. Brenneke name on gun chambered for Brenneke-designed cartridge.
2. Quality scope mount with quality optik.
3. Gebr. Bohler steel barrels. Bohler-Blitz Stahl, Bohler Spezialstahl, or Bohler Antinit 'Rostsioner' all good stuff! cheers

I'd look for a Sears, Monkey Wards or other 50s-60s vintage brand-name made on a commercial FN, rebarrel it to the caliber of your choice. Here's a dandy, undrilled HVA made on an FN: HUSKY-FN

As forrest suggested, the FN's are a great place to start from. The charlesdadly/markx/zavasta actions are also good, and have (somehwat) better bottom metal. If you find one in a 300/7/338 mag setup, 1/2 of the work is done.

if you could find a legacy that's even better.

if you want to go cheap, vz-25, AB barrel, numrich bototm metal, takeoff sights, and a cheap synthetic stock

You didn't say how much you want to spend. If you want to spend more, have Timan make you up one of his.

I put together a 416 Taylor on a Charles
Daly magnum 06 length action with a Adams&
Bennet barrel.I put it in a synthetic stock
I had for accuracy test and with hornady 400gr
RN it shoots 1.25" at 100yds.The rifle is not close to being finished.I hope with a better stock and good bedding it will do better. If not
1 minute of dead animal is close enough
