I already have a 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffery and a 450 NE. I think I "need" something a little bigger for my Caprivi elephant hunt next September. I've been jonesing for a 450 Rigby for a while. I know a Lott is more practical, but I really like the 450 rigby cartridge. I haven't seen very many for sale this year. Does anyone besides CZ chamber rifles in the 450 Rigby?? How big of a step up is the 500 Jeffery?? I've shot 4 or 5 different 500 NE doubles. They were lively but manageable. How does the 500 Jeffery compare on recoil. I recently passed on a pretty good deal on a AHR 500 Jeffery. I've been regretting it. Go Duke!!

You dont need anything more than what you have.. all will do the job without trouble if you use the right bullet (North Fork, CEB or Barnes Banded solids would be my advice)... But if you are talking that special "need" most of us know .... ahhhhh... then its different Then I would opt for a 500... Be it Jeffrey, AHR or others... I am personally very fond of my custom build in 500 AccRel - same power as the Jeffery but shorther/lighter rifle.. Recoil no issue with practice if you can shoot the calibers you already have... Just my opinion... Ulrik Hentzer

I can't imagine the recoil of a 500 Jeffery is much of a step from the 500 NE doubles you've shot. 570g at 2150 vs 570g at 2300 not much of a jump. As you know it is a jump from the 450s even the Rigby. I have a 500 Jeffery and have shot a 458 Win Mag which essentially didn't recoil at all lol Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

You need a 50 then... I have had one 500 Jeffery and it was a great gun. If you want easy go 500 A-square, if you want classic go 500 Jeffery, If you want Classic, impressive, and cool go 505 Gibbs...my fav!!! You can handel the recoil--in a good 11 to 12lb gun it is very easy to master, buld it under 10lbs and you better put a break and a soft pad. My Jeffery weighed a smidge under 9lbs and to say it was brisk was an understatement. Ed DRSS Member

.500NE to .500A2, 500JEFF. it doesn't make that much sense to me. The .585HE would be much more sensible way to go. Even more so if you think that you need something bigger. Pyzda

He doesn't have a 500 NE, he's just shot one. He has a 450 Rigby. Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

If you are going with a bolt action rifle step up to the 585 HE! Link: http://ammoguide.com/?catid=699 Link: http://forums.accuratereloadin...481034571#6481034571 D/R Hunter Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

Chuck my wrong, I red it wrong, however I still stand by my recomendation. To me the only sensible step up in power is the 585HE. Pyzda

Blue Devil: I have both a 450 Dakota as well as a 500 Jeffery. I don't think I would feel under gunned on elephant with either gun. Wayne at AHR built my 450 Dakota and it is a superb piece. I shoot 450 grain Barnes TSXs in it at around 2400 fps. The Jeffery is actually easier to shoot because it is about a pound heavier. I love my 500 Jeffery but if I were building a new 500 today, it would be Jeff Smith's 500 AccRel. IMHO that is the best designed 500 on the market. Hope that helps. TBD, I think that you are talking about my .500 Jeffery that I have for sale on Gunbroker. It's still for sale at an even more reduced price. I hate to see it go as I shot three buffalo with it but I unfortunately need the money for attorney bills. WLA

WLA I really feel the pain all the way here, when you need to sell a rifle to pay attorneys bills it is a low as one can get. Good luck Pyzda

I personally don't think that you have to justify wanting another rifle, caliber, or pistol. If you want it and can afford it without missing your other payments, GO FOR IT. I ordered one of the field grade Searcy's in .500 Nitro. I already have 2 .470's and am pretty sure that this rifle wasn''t necessary but..................................

Wingnut, you're confused. When it comes to guns, "Want" is the only requirement I'm aware of for "Need" :-)

For ease of components and resale the 500 Jeffrey is a first consideration. For equivalent power in a potentially shorter build, the 500 AccRel Nyati is a first consideration. It is also potentially less expensive. For more power than factory-spec Jeffrey, you can handload the Jeffrey easily to 1000 ftlbs. over factory, or build a 500 Mbogo, A2, etc. For a little less power than the Jeffrey, aiming at 6000 ftlbs., you could try one of the 500 MDM's. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

I would buy a 500 Jeffery, I think a exceptional cartridge has proven itself over many years. Ovny. I am Spanish My forum:www.armaslargasdecaza.com

+1 from me too. 11lb is fine, but even half a pound lighter and you feel the difference. If you get a Gibbs you won't regret it.

Picked up a 450 Rigby from American Hunting Rifles last year and it's quite smart. Waiting now to for delivery on a Dakota in this caliber just having them do some stockwork. Most people(not among the obsessed)know little about the cartridge and don't relize it's quite new compared to others. Lots of performance without any pressure problems. My favorite.
