Around 3 years ago I conjured the idea that I wanted to build a big bore rifle that flew in the face of good taste and what we here on AR define as an "appropriate tasteful big bore rifle"

I wanted to bend the social conventions and build a rifle that will truly sicken the purists....well I think I did a pretty good job Big Grin

I Give you the "Tactical DGR"

As the post states the caliber is .500 A2 it uses a Stiller action suited to the Lapua sized cases, its a push feed with M16 style extractor. It is center stack using the MK5 Weatherby style inline center stack box. She weighs 12.98 pounds with scope and is fitted out with Badger FTE break on the 20" barrel. Metal work is finished in Dark Earth Duracoat, stock finished in Desert Camo pattern. It points and feels good in the hand. Against convention Ive opted for no irons but rather am pinning my life on an NXS 1-4 which I think is a much tougher scope than any leupold. In the future I may opt to have a custom floorplate made so I can get another round down.

Enjoy and have me committed if you see fit dancing

I think a tactical DGR is a wonderful idea! The Stiller action is the cat's meow, but you do need the extended mag that holds say 20 rounds down just in case you are charged by a herd of elephants. The other problem is the scope. A true tactical will have a 8-32x50 scope for those 1000 yard shots that everyone takes regularly.

The only wrong anti-purist move you made was not putting an Aimpoint on that thing. Nice going!

I would have put a "Scout" rifle scope mounted ahead of the action and a mercury recoil reduction tube as well. Other then that, you're ready to take out light vehicles and small aircraft.

Tactical DGR? Really?! It can't even begin to approach tactical without a quad rail!! Then, of course, you would need a minimum of nine pounds worth of lights, IR light filters, lasers, pressure pad switches for the lights and lasers, grips, bi-pods, and an appropriate ratio of black electrical tape and zip ties. NO portion of the quad rail can be left blank!

Then you truly approach the 'Tactical DGR' moniker!!!

and the background should be a mall

and a break is a brake

and with five tines on the end I could have used it in the barn this morning

more seriously, well done and it looks like fun Smiler

VERY COOL! But we need better and BIGGER pics. I'd buy a rifle like that in a second if the opportunity arose. Only change would be good iron sights using an XS rear peep.
Great job, now go kill something with it!

I don't see sling swivel studs for a tactical sling so you can sling it down and slightly behind you. Big Grin

It does have flush cups....TAB gear sling not far away !! I did consider the aimpoint but the nxs 1-4 is true 1x with illuminated np1 reticle and ability to crank it up to 4x if needed it will be more versatile.

I will get bigger pics for you guys over the weekend.

In all seriousness it does carry really nicely and point well. I cant wait to hunt some feral pigs with it and with any luck a water buff in the coming few years !!

I would make two recomendations.
One, if you are not going to do iron sights I would have the scope in good QD mounts and a Docter Optic, in a QD mount sighted in and ready to go. You can carry it in your pocket.

Second. I would have a second scope in QD mounts, sighted in and ready to go.

Scopes on hard kicking guns can and do fail, more often than on lesser recoiling guns, not to mention the standard accidental hard knocks a scope might get enroute to or on a hunt.

The straight line feed magazine is a good idea.

OK it is not a Big Game rifle in the British tradition...

PC you need to get it running with AI detach mags mate Wink
if something needs more than 1 shot from a 500 a-square then it definetly needs 5+ shots...or something Big Grin

What a great forum where everyone is so supportive! I particularly like the suggestion about a quad rail! This would make a great rifle even greater!

Nice build, it looks real nice. Only thing you forgot was to thread the barrel for a door breacher Smiler

Your scope IMO, is the best money can buy. I have a few NF scopes, a couple more than fifteen years old and have never had a single issue with one of them.

without a doubt nightforce nxs are probably the toughest scope out there Im suprised more big bore guys have not caught on to the 1-4 nxs and 2.5-10 leupold is not even in the same ball park.
Today ishot it with 570gr woodleighs infront of 102 gr of varget it chronoed at 2208 fps its as much as i wantfor practical shootability the .500,s are in a different leaugs to .416,s etc. but not as bad as my .585 nyati. The .500 A2 i reckon is at the end of practical. Anyway i have that load with 570 woodleigh hitting 2" hight at 100 yards should be zero at 140-150 yards. Ill confirm this my bzllistics program when i have a chance.

PC- What a disappointment. You didn't add the Quad rail or forward Grip ( with Flashlight attachment) and DBAL laser. You also forgot the Doctor Optic on the side rail so you can shoot "homeboy" style. The scope just has to go dude! Add an aimpoint, Folding stock ( ala AI) and over the top sling mounts. A folding bayonet and a Harris Bipod on the quad rails will help with your street cred too! You have much to learn grasshopper!-Rob
