I've got the foundation of a custom rifle sitting in the safe right now, waiting for me to make a final decision as to the caliber, here's what I've got: Winchester Model 70 classic, 7mm STW McMillan Echols Legend stock, magnum fill, #4 Shilen barrel channel. Williams 1pc Obendorf bottom metal I was planning on building a .375 H&H, but the more time I put in with my 450/400 Ruger No. 1, the more I'm thinking a bolt action twin would be nice to have. So, is it feasible to do a 404 Jeffrey build on a 7mm STW action? I've read most of the threads discussing Model 70 conversions and they were done mostly on 300 RUMs, which, I gather, have a different magazine box and follower. What parts would I need to find before sending everything off to the gunsmith? I intend to use Hornady brass, bullets and dies; are the Clymer and PTG reamers the proper specs to use that brass?

I just spoke to Lon Paul who builds safari rifles for a living about a 404. Your Model 70 would work nicely. You might have a $1,000 in it before you finished. The Mod 70 and the Echol's stock will make a great rifle. Mark MARK H. I'm accumulating the parts slowly to spread out the cost The last part I will buy is the barrel as then the caliber choice becomes terribly, terribly final.

Nothing's final. You just buy another barrel. **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

Winchester still has the mag box and follower for RUMs...or did a few weeks ago. But with the 404, mine fed best with a follower for a 375. I don't think there is a lick of difference in the action itself. Probably need a little tweeking regardless. "There always seems to be a big market for making the clear, complex."

I owned a Model 70 Classic that I converted to 404 Jeffery. It was originally a 7mm Remington Magnum. All it required was a new barrel, some opening of the feed rails (very little), and the bolt face had to be opened slightly too. I swapped out the bottom metal for one from Ted Blackburn, but that was for looks. Fed cartridges like "buddah". One the smoothest rifles I ever owned. One of the guys here on AR purchased it from me. Good action for the 404 Jeffery. Garrett

If you want a ballistic brother to the 450/400 and use the same bullets, try the 400 H&H. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Yes, your .404 Jeffery project is feasible on your 7mm STW action, but, keep going up for the ultimate Big Bore, the .500 Jeffery.

You could do a .375 with almost no work. If you want a .404, go to the AR classifieds and look for a 300 RUM. The rails and box are already set for a .404. I think it would be an eaiser conversion. MMP
