Any experience as to the ambient temp sensitivity of either of these powders?

"all" powders are sensitive to starting temp and pressure, in a n absolute sense (that's the "aesoteric" moment) in Texas, not really .. these are basically the same powder (don't interchange load data) and are used by the military to load 223 for all conditions .. one could infer its kinda stable opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Lawndart, I have tried a few different powders in my Montana 1999 Douglas barreled .458 Lott. The two that stand out with 500 gr Barnes solids and triple shocks are AA 2520 and AA 2230. My African load for buffalo this year was 78gr of 2230 which does about 2220 fps according to my Oehler. Warning don't shoot solids in a herd, it just punches holes straight through them. I shot a nice 40.5 Dugga boy in the Save with Terry Anders on the Savuli concession. The Lott in my estimation is a perfect rifle for dangerous game. I also have a good practice load for the 405 gr rem bullet. Good shooting George

AA2520 has also been my best friend in all the Lott's I've owned.. Recoil pulse just feels a bit softer and not so snappy as the rest. MopaneMike

Footnote, but for .45-70/90-ish plinking loads for "play purposes" with 350 grainers, RL-7 works pretty well. Not a hunting load for Africa for DG but actually works pretty good if you feel like shooting a white tail with a .458 Lott instead of a normal deer rifle :-)

Thank you all for the further insights. The 350 Speer Mag Tip SN as a deer/hog/practice load sounds good. I have also been considering the Hodgdon 60% rule (Use 60% of the Maximum H-4895 listed by Hodgdon and load that for an introductory/practice load. I do have some RL-7 and AA 2520 as well. Ok, off to plot, plan and load. Thanks again, LD

Ha, Ha, it is nut cutting time at camp lawndart. I am putting together all the "proof of concept" cartridges in time for Reno. I have learned so much from this board in the last six years..about three lifetimes worth. LD
