With all of the dislike for the .458 Win Mag, has anyone ever tried necking the .500 down? I wonder what velocity would be possible? I understand this would probably be way to impractical for a bolt rifle, but what about a Ruger #1 in .458? I would like to read your thoughts on it!

ROTR, The October 2003 Magnum Magazine from RSA has a long article on the .458 Sabi, pp52-58, by Gregor Woods. The .458 Sabi is based on: "...a .500 Jeffery case necked down to .458 and shortened to 68mm, launching a 500gr softnose at 2300fps, a 500gr solid at 2400fps, and a 550gr soft or solid at 2250fps. Shoulder angle is 40 degrees which makes this cartridge appear smaller than its actual dimension -- it is unusually handsome for a big-bore." ![]() The 550 grain Woodleigh soft and solid has a sectional density of .375. What a boondoggle. The .450 Majoor is a shortened .416 Rigby case necked to .458, which would be similar to my 45 Lapua. That one will easily push a 500 grainer close to 2450 fps from a 22" barrel, with RL-15, 100 grains. Having the great .338 Lapua Magnum case head on your ammo and a throat like a .458 Lott makes it all possible with the .45 Lapua. Don't need no complications from a .458 Sabi if the 45 Lapua is available. BTW, the 45 Lapua case is 68mm long too, just like the .458 Sabi. The 45 Lapua would be the 11.6x68mm for the metric lingo, or the 11.6mm TSUNAMI, and yes, I just made that up to go with the 9.5mm TORNADO, or .375 Lapua (9.5x69mm). The .423 Lapua might be the 10.75mm HURRICANE, or 10.75x68.6mm.

ROTR, Somebody beat you to it, eh? And they called it a .458 Sabi, and Gregor Woods thinks it is a "handsome" cartridge. I think the .458/.338 Lapua Magnum is more handsome. ![]()
