I am presently kicking around the idea of a 416 bolt rifle. Should it be 416 Rem or should I wait for 416 Ruger if it comes out.
It can't be a really high dollar Mauser. I have owned many Remington deer rifles and quite a few Sako. I love Sako, have 2 left but the only rifle that ever broke on me is a Sako. I have never had any feeding problems with any of my rifles. Remington rifles have been very good for me, did not like the one model 70 win I had about 10 years ago. Most of my rifles are Remington.

I now have CZ 375 that was a little rough when I got it,(action) but it has become a very smooth and reliable rifle. Feeds all 3 NF bullets fine.
Extremely accurate, shoots NF fps, cps and softs in a dime for 3 of each at 100 yards with 71 gr RX15 2600+
Planning on buying an action, doesn't have to be high dollar mauser, maybe 2 groove pac nor barrel, many people say the are low pressure for powder burnt and accurate and clean up nicely. All of my barrels have been Hart Match stainless so far, guess I am boring. Do not want stainless action but will get stainless barrel.

On my 375 I had Brockman install his laminated stock, just love it. made my first African trip last year with it. the stock looks more european then American

will probably have rifle teflon coated.
What items do most of the African hunters recommend?

another item I have on my 375 is a strange bolt handle. A friend invited me to shoot his tactical rifle one day, it had a tactical bolt handle, in panic situation, you will not miss it. Most people will think it is disgusting to look at but I really love from a working point of view, I emailed New Guy a picture of it, it is really different on a hunting rifle good for working but not looks

There is a Mark X .416 Remington in the Classifieds right now. You could change out the safety or make other changes to it and be well within your budget. You could also buy a new CZ .416 Rigby and spend $1000 on it and be under budget.

Action -- I like a Model 70 or Mauser style.
Barrel -- I like 24 inches +/-
Stock -- I like a trim walnut stock.
Finish -- I like a nice blued finish
Sights -- I like a decent-sized front bead and a standing shallow V rear.

Caveat: I have not seen the .416 Rem mentioned above in person and do not have personal knowledge of its condition.

I think you already have a good example of what you need in your CZ .375.

You could probably duplicate it in .416 Remington or, better still, .458 Lott within your budget. I'd skip the .416 because, while it is a step up from the .375, it's not all that big of a step.

Build a Lott (or just buy a CZ .458 Lott), and shoot .458 WinMag-level loads in it until you're ready to go after elephant.

I really like the .416 caliber. Seems to hit a lot harder than the .375.

The CZ 550 in 416 Rigby is not as lithe and handy as the .375s. The .416 Remmy is fine and would make a lighter package which would be nice.

In specing a .416, I'd look for the same things I liked in my .375 ... function, hardiness (and resistance to recoil damage), fit, accuracy and weight.

You don't have to make a cannon out of the .416s to have a very effective caliber ... so keep the load pressures moderate.

Might wind up going with Montana action and barrel and maybe Brockman stock

There was an AHR in 416 Rigby on Gunbroker.

I disagree, with whomever said it, that the 416 doesn't hit THAT much harder than the 375. Like hell it won't.

Oh yes, it was said that the 416Rem makes for a more handy package. I'll second that. It think the CZ is really best utilized for 45-50 cal thumpers. My M70 is becoming a Lott but I'd really like a CZ 450 Rigby. Maybe a Gibbs too.

I've come to the point where I'm convinced it's hard to top the M70. Not a revelation for many but I had to work my way back around to it. They just flat out work right.

Gi you should get a M70 in 416Rem.
