My good friend JudgeG visited me on Saturday and gave me a beautiful customized CZ 458 Lott. The rifle has been worked over by Roger Farrell and is awesome. What kind of scope should I put on it that will withstand the recoil, and how much eye relief do I need to be safe???

You'll want max eye relief!!
leupold 1.5x5, 1x4, or something along those lines. The tasco titan 1.25-4.5 (the 30mm straight tube one) holds up well

Fo thumbr what I would use the Lott for, a 2.5 Leup would do just fine.

After going through two scopes on my Lott I tried the 2.5X leupold and after over 200 rounds it is doing fine.

Another option is one of the red dot sights.
I usually do not like anything that is battery dependant but they are quite popular on police SWAT, and Military rifles. I have a Zeiss Z Point, on loan from a friend, that I will be ststing on a Blaser R 93 0n 375 H&H. The Blaser Hit Pro looks pretty good too.
The Aimpoint and the EO-Tech are 2 other options.
Eye relief is not critical so you can mount them so there is no way it can hit you in the face.

Dale: The only scope that will probably last on top of that cannon is the 2.5 Leupold and maybe the 1.5X5X20 Leupold. I have a 1.75X6X42 SWARO PH model on m 340 ( granted not a Lott, but that caliber is a very "sharp" kicker") with great success.
I had one fail on a 458 (1.5X5 Leupie), but my current 1.5 has withstood the 416 for close to 10 years now. Whatever scope you decide on, get TWO (2) on QD rings. I always carry that type of arrangement on my 375 and up. Let me know what you decide. jorge

Jorge, et al,

I went with Leupold. I did it with some reservations however. I bought a Leupold two years ago, a 1.5X5 20 mm, and put it on my 375. After about 30 rounds the front optic went bad. Leupold fixed it in short order and I had it back in less than a week, but I mounted a Nikon on the 375, and it has helped kill everything I have taken in Africa. The Leupold is now mounted on my 350 Magnum, and has been great. I ordered the Leupold 1.5X5 today with the German 4 reticle. I wanted to put a Swarovski on the new 458, but Talley doesn't make 30mm rings for the CZ550. I called Talley and they are in the process of finishing the first batch of them, and if they will send me a set I will give them a thorough "ringing out" with the Lott. I hope this Leupold holds up. I may buy the Swarovski and use the Leupold as a backup. Time will tell. Thanks to all for the advice.

Good choice with the German #4 Dale. I think you'll find that it works great for close in work. Also, be very careful when you mount the front ring. Keep it away from the front lens. Hey, my trophies are airborne on the wy to atlanta as we speak! jorge

Jorge,

Thanks for the tip about the scope. I hope your trophies have a nice trip. I wonder what the seating is like in the cargo hold?? Give Dawna a big hug for me.

1115, can I hijack your thread for a second ???

Jorge...you recommend the QR mounts.
I´m about to make ready a Winchester M70 in 375 H&H as a surprice present for my son after he succesfully got his PHD in computer sience.

This is a three year old Classic Safari, blue steel/ walnut, bedded and with superb trigger job.
It has the standard Leupold mounts with only the front ring bearing, and I will change this to a more sturdy QR or QRW setup.

Wich one to go for ??

Arild, I have a VXIII & 2.5 in QRW mounts. These scopes have had 350 & 50 rds resp. from my .404jeffery w/ no problems in scope or mounts. The QRW is a good setup, just "dehorn" the ring levers before you take them afield.

Arild: My experience with QD mounts is limited to Warne, Leupold and EAW. Personally I like the Warne's and the Leupolds are very simple and sturdy. I don't care for the EAWs at all. They are an "overengineered" contraption and while they are the easiest to operate, they do require adjustments from time to time and anythig above a 375 H&H tends to shake them loose. jorge

As far as quick detachable mounts are concerned you might try Griffin & Howe. I have used them for years on 3 pre64 mod 70's in 300H&H,375H&H and 458WM; as well as on a customized springfield 30-06. Has always worked fine.

I just picked up my Lott from David Christman. It was built on a CZ550. I used Talley QD and a Leupold FX-II 2.5x20mm ultra light.

My Swarovski 1.25-4.5 has been on everything from the 458 Lott to a 416 Taylor and subjected to over 100 rounds of big bore and still going strong. Currently it is on my 458 Lott and doing quite well according to RIP!

Good choice. EITHER Leupold 2.5x OR Leupold 1.5x-5x. Matte black with reticle of choice.

Those Okies are crazy about Swarovski scopes, if lb404 and PRDATOR are any indication. This Kentucky rifleman prefers Leupold. Wink

BTW, lb404, that .458 Lott of yours was right on zero and sub-MOA, eh? The Swarovski was working fine there. thumb

Was that a Pre-64 M70 by Sterling Davenport with Krieger barrel?
