416 Rigby?

Lynn Beier416 Rigby?
Today I was at the range one rifle brought was Ruger #1 416 Rigby. The bench setup is not optimal for big bores anyway each time I shot there was a flash, finally figured out it was in my eyes. I've heard others talk about this but never experienced it. Has any one else noticed this and is this detrimental?

RIPGo see an ophthalmologist about a possible vitreous detachment.

.429If the flash is actually happening in your eyes, you may want to talk to the optometrist about the possibility of getting a detached retina. Some people are much more prone to it than others. If you aren't having the problem with smaller guns it just may be the problem.
And yes you can damage your eyes from extreme recoil.

FAST996Are you talking about muzzle flash or some possible neurological symptom?

Any flashes of light in your eye needs attention. I had the flashing light thing and had a small tear of the retina, not casused by heavy recoil but by shrinking vitreous that pulled a small blood vessel. The shrinking vitreous is normal in folks over 50, tearing the blood vessel was bad luck.
The Vet "welded" up the tear with a laser, and I still shoot my 416 and 470NE without a problem.
Bottom line, get it looked at, not by an optometrist, but by a board certified
Ophthalmologist.

RIPJim,
I know you think your ophthalmologist is divine, but that occupational classification should not be capitalized in that usage.

Here we have the perfect justification for the .395's, the thinking man's caliber, and the seeing man's caliber, from 400/.395 NE to .395 Tatanka, light to heavy rifles, with retina preserving effectiveness for any game, and just plain fun.

Lynn BeierThanks for the info, this over fifty crap just keeps getting better and better. I have shot enough to know the flash was internal not external, tested by closing my eyes during one shot, still the same flashbulb effect. Guess I better give up the 450 Dakota. Lynn

RIPLynn,
My .416 Rigby No.1 is being rebarreled (and re-ejectored) to 400/.395 Nitro Express.
This is a sign of age, and wisdom, and wanting something I can shoot from my wheelchair without popping a wheely or a retina.
It will have the GSC Trio of 340-grainers at 2300 to 2400 fps.
It will have the S&H Unholy Trinity of 310 to 330-grainers at 2400 fps.
It will have an LBT LFNGC 410-grainer at 2150 fps.
It will kill better with less recoil than any rifle on the planet.

JBoutfishnJeez RIP, he is divine, he repaired the tear and said I can still shoot the big boomers.

It has been 5 years and hundereds of rounds since the laser job.

Don't give up anything unless you have to. Like I said, get checked out by an opthalmologist. (lower case for RIP

You might want to look into a retirement home in africa you can shoot pesky buff and pachyderms that wander too close

If I was bill Gates I would rebore a 9,3x74 double to 400 Nitro!

400 grains @ 2150 in a 12 lb rifle

RIPAnd a Searcy Classic in 400/.395 NE, about 9 pounds for comfort.

Lynn BeierI will check with my eye doc and go from there. Really hate to give up the 416 Rigby as it is undoubtly one of the most accurate rifles I've owned. Thanks again, Lynn

May still be shy of 30 and may not have flashing problems, but those ballistics still look sweet to me... probably be stupid not to put one together, you know, to save the eyes.

RobgunbuilderI'm going to make a 400HP power chair for my old age with wheel chocks and a intravitreal injection system for my AMD ( when I get it). Old age isn't gonna effect my shooting. Better living through technology.-Rob

More to this than you may realize. For the last 10 years my distance vision has improved with each new eye exam. Now corrected to better than 20/10
