Any thought on a peep sight for big bores?

Something like a Lyman 57 or similar vintage Redfield?

I have a rear peep sight and a red fiber optic front sight on my Dakoata Safari in 458 Lott. I am 72 years old and I LOVE only having to focus my eyes on just the front sight. I can shoot it pretty well too for my use on Buffalo in Africa.

I had iron sights on my 404 Jeffery and used it to take some Buffalo with Andrew in Zambia, but I have recently mounted a Leupold fixed 2.5 scope on it now, and I shoot much better with it.

My 458 Lott kicks a bit more (!) than my 404, so I still don’t want a scope on it…yet! The peep is doing just fine for my use on close shots on Buff.

I have gone to Skinner peep sights on two of my big bores in my ripe old age of 77. I like a big aperture. Aperture sights are very accurate/fast and make a rifle nice to carry.

Also, that Leopold FX 2.5 is an awesome scope for big bores with its very long eye relief.

Good choices.

My Whitworth .375 came with a Redfield receiver sight. I replaced the tiny front bead with an XS front post with the white line up the front.

I used it to take a nice 10 point at 60+ yards a few years ago and while no where near as elegant as those Echols rifles, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it anywhere for any critter.

To echo Michael’s comment, those are indeed good looking peep sights. Wood stocked rifle isn’t bad either!!!

I have a cz 550 in 375 H&H , I put a New England Custom Gun peep sight on it. I'm very pleased with the quality and function.

That is exactly what I have on my 458 Lott, and am just as pleased, so far.

Quite a few of the original Gibbs 505 rifles came with factory peep sights

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Jim Brockman in Gooding Idaho makes a peep sight that pops up when you take the scope off, based on a talley base..

I like the Leupold 3X best of all, or the Leupold Alaskan2.5X, both excellent on big bores or small bores..depending on use..Ive used the 3x on elk deer, and Hippo and buffalo..

I have a Williams foolproof on my 50 alaskan lever action. Very quick target pick up with the peep.

That’s my plan as well. I’m going to mount Skinner’s CZ 550 aperture unit on my AHR .404 Jeff.

I thought the Brockman pop up peep was a fantastic idea when I first heard about it in 1998. I contacted Jim and ordered one for my Pre 64 model 70 30/06 immediately. I’ve been anxiously awaiting its arrival ever since.

FYI the Interarms, Zastava etc actions made in Serbia are D&T-ed for Lyman or Redfield peep sights, even the LH models. I have a few rifles built on LH Zastava actions and had a Lyman sight set up for LH use.

On another rifle I acquired a pop-up peep sight from an early BRNO rifle and had that fitted to a LH CZ550. That’s quite a neat set up as you can use QD scope mounts giving you quick access to both sight options.

Ive use the Lyman,Redfield,Marble peeps on my big bores and lighter guns as well, they work as well as a scope up to about 200 yards..

The Williams receiver sight is as good as any, I have several guns with the Williams
, some folks say they break easy, mine have not,but then some folks can break an anvil with a powder puff..

If I were a guide today in DG areas, Id prefer a 20" carbine in a large bore 416 Rem or 404 or even a 458.. with a peep sight and take the disc out.

Buy Talley scope bases and get a Talley peep sight. It's quick detachable and interchangeable with a scope.

I have a NEGC peep sight on my 416 Ruger. While I really like having a back up receiver sight I wish there was some way to store it on the rifle when not in use. NECG was not smart enough to make their trap door pistol grip cap compatible with with their sight or any other receiver sight that I know of.

Ive used the Talley QD peep, its handy and you can carry it in your pocket. its a dandy but the peep on a talley is too small for my hunting I prefer the ghost peep..I also like the old REdfields and Marbles sands the disc..

Dont over look Redfields"Little blue peep" if you can find one..I have several of those. a work of art, simple and they sure do work..

I prefer a peep sight over a scope for most uses. but the option of a low power scope is handy..Peep for DG suits me best..

My all time favorite peep is the old Lyman mod 35 the is attached to the Mauser bolt release that come on my JP Sauer amd sohnsDeluxe 30-06. Hard to find and are all over place on price from $250 to $1600??? Id hold out for less than $250 myself.

If the gun has weaver bases, XS sights makes a backup sight in two heights. It comes with ghost ring and smaller aperture for about $75.

Peep sights are actually quite appropriate for dangerous game rifles.
W.J. Jeffery often fort them to their 450/400 Farquharson rifles and Holland and Holland used a flip up peep in the rib of their 500/465 Royal “India” models. They may have referred to the peep as the “India” sight.
Holland also had very elegant peeps, much like a Lyman staff, recessed into the top strap of some of their rifles - that’s a very nice feature.

BTW don't discount the shallow V irons for up to 200 yds and on buffalo/Hippo I would feel good to 300 yds under rare circumstances like a wounded animal..I dont think most of our modern American shooters have shot the shallow V, but seem to condemn it, based on too many gun scribes articles..Its actually quite accurate and always there for you when things go South..Many of the barrel mounted iron sights Ive seen were never looked at and are for display, How so?? the sights are blocked by the scope basses is a dead give away!

XS Sights also has a dedicated Winchester M70 sight with a Ghost Ring Rear, and a tall white stripped front sight. I've used these on Winchester 70, 416s and 458s

Also have the Mauser 98 variant on .35 Whelen and .416 Taylor.
They work for my eyes.

Before I needed glasses I had 375HH Whitworth with shallow V irons. Most people would not believe how accurate that sight is for decent eyes. I mean teapot at 225 yds!

The shallow V combined with a thin post and use flush with the top like a pistol sight picture is fast, accurate and seldom used these days but was a favorite on the lever action 92 and 94s of the Texas RAngers rifles, My Texas Ranger grandads 94 Trapper is so set up, and its been my favorite whitetail rifle over the years and its a 4 digit gun..Give it a try before you speak!!

My pre-64 .458 came only with a peep with no rear sight provided. Smithson makes a peep that fits in the same recess as their detachable bases. Don’t forget that peeps were issued on M1s M14s and M16s. I started on them with a Sheridan air rifle as a kid and really enjoy them.

Is the barrel tapped and just no rear sight installed? Or not tapped at all? I have seen one pre-64 458 - the one that the guy used to killed a tiger that ended up at the Smithsonian, that had a peep but no rear island sight - the barrel was tapped though.
