There are some here who could shoot Big Bertha off their shoulder, others who reload those big cases with some form of Triple X BS powder and claim immunity to recoil.

I have met so many in the field who claimed recoil did not bother them, many had bent trigger guards???????Smiler Smiler

the "hottest" slug load I could find is 1oz (438 grains)at 1760FPS, assume 40gr of powder and a 6# gun...

recoil is a measely 49ft-lbs

a 458 lott, 9.5# gun
500gr bullet, 2300fps, 82gr, 9.5#,
79ft-lb

take that to 460 weatherby
500gr
2600fps
110 gr
9.5#

110 ft-lbs

Now look at the 3 1/2" 10Ga slug load.

2 1/4oz - 983gs slug
@ 1350 fps
w/ 45gr powder
in a 10 lb shotgun
equals
65 ft lbs @ 20 fps

Hell Tom, you know me, if I am ever back down your way I will give it a try. We can shoot my 600 nitro pistol and your super light weight stompers. Then we can ease the pain over a few beers.

I'm a big wuss. Trying to manage 3-inch Magnum 2-ounce 12-gauge turkey loads out of an H&R Topper-style singleshot nearly ruined me for good. I desisted after about 5 rounds in order not to develop a lifelong flinch. A Ruger No. 1 rechambered to .450 Nitro is my limit. Much rather shoot nothing much more than a .450-400 on that platform.

And when you big bore enthusiest get long in the tooth like self, you will suffer for the sinful life you have led shooting the big bores.

Your neck, shoulders and elbows will be nourished by Conglotin, Ibuprofren, various rubs, message theripist, Choirpractors, doctors of one sort or another and all those other persons whos occupations you cannot spell, but to no avail, so "cowboy up" your day is just around the cornor!! Smiler Smiler

Oh yeah, you will need two, not one, hearing aid and they cost the price of a good double rifle these days! Smiler

Happy trails to you until we meet again!

I have a 9 lb., 3 1/2" turkey gun with HV 2 oz. and a 10 lb., 13 oz .416 Rigby, 400 gr. The turkey gun kicks considerably more BUT I only shoot it once each year in practice FROM A LEAD SLED to check the scope. The .416 is shot many times in practice from the sticks. It is big enough.

I have a 10-ga magnum barrel for a Thompson Center TCR 87 (single-shot break-over), which makes about a 7-1/2 pound gun. I use normally use 1-1/2 ounce handloads in it but have shot a few 2-1/4 ounce Federal factory loads. That's about my limit on pain, or maybe it's a little above my limit.

I'll be happy to let anyone bring their slugs along and shoot them in my stoeger, with it's hard pad, and then shoot my 500 jeffe... 6.4# and 9.5# respectively.

Jeffe,

I would love to shoot your 500 Jeffery, gunna be in maryland anytime soon. I'll let you shoot my 12ga, but I doubt you'd get much of a kick out of it. Just so you know I'm not trying to compare a 12ga to a big bore rifle.

Cory,

this was a bubba shoot 11 months ago... wish you had been there to try some out

my point was that a 12ga, while it boots, has nothing on a 460 weatherby..

I remember reading the post on this shoot. I wish I was there too. If I ever get a chance to go to one of these shoots, I would love to shoot the .500 DR. I have a soft spot for DR like many do.
