You've got to try and drag Mac into this? What's that matter, can't take the heat on your own.

Just as I thought. You have never had a .500 Jeffery.

If there is anyone here who takes themselves way to seriously, it's you.

No offense dude but this is about the third time you have jumped my ass about something here. If you don't want and argument, don't start one.

Dave,
I did not invite Mac to snap your thong.
Good one though, much appreciated.
Heat?
What heat?
Indeed I do not own a 500 Jeffery, never have, never will, unless by some weird quirk of fate someone begs me to take their instrument of torment off their hands.
You do indeed have a closed little mind.
Hence you rub a lot of folks wrong.
Grow up.

RIP: You demand "no hotter than 2300 fps w/ 535 gr. bullets. in standard 98...Believe me, 2300 fps will flatten anything on the planet.. but for the hot rods, more is within reason. My own loads clock 2365...so far 100 rounds have had no apparent determental effect..no pressure signs..nothing!...your thoughts please...

the 500 jeffe, in a cz, will take whatever you can stand. The most powerful round designed to fit IN the standard mauser 98 is the 585 nyati, with the 550 express a close second.

In fact, some folks willingly proof cz 550s with every shot of a 500x460 weatherby...the side of the action clearly states max pressure, and AA's loads for his round are FAR higher.

In fact, since the 500 jeffe is larger in capacity than the 460 case, it is reasonable to assume that any load matching or outpacing the 500 jeffe in the 460 case is higher pressure, assuming the same reloading technique.
(bolt thrust discussion aside)

Want to take the bolt thrust disucssion into play? Sorry, I am not smart enough to honestly tell you if the same bolt face diameter has more or less thrust, due to body design.

Rebate?
LMAO -- the weatherby case is also rebated.

Duane,
I do not demand anything.
Do as you want.
Maybe Alf will tell us what loads set back his Mauser 98 500 Jeffery.
I gotta go rebarrel one of those .510/460Wby rifles to the second 500 Mbogo.
No flies on that one at all.

Well I just bought my 500 Jeffery RCBS dies on clearance at Midway for $231 shipped (yes I know the RCBS Safari Dies are coming out, but I couldn't wait!).

Now I just need brass, bullets, and my rifle!

Do you guys with 500 Jefferys have any load data for a 535g Woodleigh at around 2000 to 2100 fps with decent load density (right around 100g of powder)? Now that my dies are coming in I'm planning to order Jamison brass and 535g Woodleigh bullets.

Chuck

I love my Jeffery. RIP has shot it on that hot day in Oklahoma. I probably have shot it more than 100 times myself and other interested folks at the gun club have cut their big bore teeth to a tune of 75+ more rounds. I am in the process of adding a Lyman 35 to that rifle to use as a ghost ring, and if I can find the proper hunt, take it off to Africa for a go at buff. I have never seen any problems with the 500 Jeffery. Essentially, I partially full length size the round after the initial fire forming and the Horneber cases have been loaded at least 10 times each and seem to be holding up well to the cause. I also had some 540 gr. hard cast lead bullets made up for me (250) and they shoot quite well although not to the same point of impact. Ferrel pigs seem to die very well of lead poisoning! The only issue I have had with my rifle was feeding the GS custom flat nosed solids. I had to send it off to have it regulated on feeding.

Well I called Harlan, the barrel's on my 500 Jeffery, they're starting on the effort to make it feed, then they have to put the hardware back on. Probably by the end of April it will be sitting here waiting to hurt me!

Mine's being built on a 1917 Enfield action. Any thoughts?

Chuck, I hate to break it to you, but I think you're going to be disappointed with the 500 Jeffery's recoil. I'm reading "African Rifles and Cartridges" by John Taylor and, to quote Taylor, "As with the .505, I was most pleasantly surprised at to the lightness of the recoil - no normally constituted hunter would be worried by it in the slightest." Eeker

... Taylor's 577 must have caused his shoulder to go numb. bewildered

Andy,
'l done 3 on enfields -- only feeding being an issue... Jim's article on making rigby and gibbs worked great!

the only 50 i've shot wiht less recoil is my 500 AR .. and that was entirely intentional, 25-30 gr less powder for the same results!

Hey Jeffe,

If I wind up really loving the cartridge, then I'll probably get one built on a CZ550 action...since that's what my 404J and several other of my hunting rifles are based on.

Good hunting,

Andy

Hi all, my converted 500 Jeffery came in today. Harlan sent my rear sight in a baggie, must be a problem with it, otherwise it looks awesome. So I need a rear sight put on and get some ammunition loaded as soon as my press is ready. It weighs 11lbs empty but the balance is much better so it actually feels lighter and points better ...

Range report to follow in a couple of weeks ...

Chuck

What's wrong with the rear sight? Had a chance to shoot it yet?

Harlan didn't like the sight AHR put on, so he put on the stock CZ Island without a sight. I haven't had a chance to talk to him, but I think he didn't like anything tapped into the barrel. So I need to find a new rear sight. That's Ok by me since he sent back my 375 H&H barrel and that's tapped for the NECG sight AHR put on, my friend's got a Mauser action he wants to use it on. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet and probably won't for three to four weeks, gonna be in Miami and DC for work.

I'll post a range report once I shoot it. I've got a Leupold 1.5 - 5x with Talley QR mounts that I've had on it when it was a 375 H&H, but I'm gonna shoot it with open sights first.

Now how do I change my user name from Chuck 375 ... lol
