Tyler KempWho can build me a 2 Bore Single Shot Cartridge Gun?
Medium loads on left, max loads on right.
Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!
Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

bigdoggy700Samual Baker was a big guy at 6' 8" tall and nearly 400 lbs. Using 600 grains of black powder will push a 3500 grain bullet to about 1500 ft/sec. That is 17,500 ft lbs of energy and generates about 740 ft lbs of recoil with a 20# rifle. No wonder it spun him around and he had a nose bleed!!
30 July 2008, 00:01
SAFARIKIDBigdogy, actually us "lighter"guys fair better as we "roll with the recoil"vrs standing there absorbing it.For example,Ken Owens, our 4 bore and 600 double rifle builder is 6ft and 140 pds and he regulates all these cannons himself! He has shot up to 20 rounds at a regulation test!...IF I ever get my 2 bore,I will work up the loads from 1000fps to whatever(1400?) and after all,I dont shoot these a whole lot anyway.

MacifejMaybe a 6" thick sorbethane Beignet could be fitted?? OR! Maybe the whole buttstock could be sorbethane!!!

SAFARIKID, would laugh that off!! You'll have to cut the rifle weight in half to get him interested!

zimbabweI'm not positive but the last time I was in Clayton Nelsons shop I THINK he had a couple of 2 bore barrels but they MAY have been 4 Bore. He builds a nice single shot action.

In all seriousness, try
Martini & Hagn. They make their own action. Ask them to make one SAFARIKID size!!

I have handled one of Clayton's 600 nitros, One hell of a nice big beefy rifle!

RobgunbuilderSomeday soon I'm going to buy a wire EDM machine for making complete actions. Then watch out! I know what you like! It will not be cheap! It will not be quick! But It will work!-Rob

Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!
And the answer to the question is.......Clayton Nelson. If hes up to it now or you are up to the wait that is a different question. Clayton can certainly to the work.

Jim ManionOh, boy!
Well, Rob, if you want to plan ahead, you might want to think about a 1 bore. SAFARIKID was not dissuaded by the 600, nor the 4 bore. He now seeks a 2 bore, and that can only mean the 1 bore will not be far behind.

What kind of velocity do you think you can get a pound of lead up to?

viperidaeThere is a gentleman at Action Castings who goes by "Smoke" and he is developing a single shot action that is supposed to be able to take up to 20mm. If anyone would like his contact info (I am not affiliated with him in any way) let me know.

viperidaeI am posting this information due to the multiple requests I have received for it.
Here is the contact info for "Smoke" and the potentially 20mm capable action from Action Castings. From my communication with "Smoke" he seems to be in the very early stages of developing this action. But, that being said he is the only one I am aware of currently taking on such a task. The more interest he gets the better that chance of it materializing. I have no affiliation with "Smoke" but he did as I spread his contact info:

CannonIf I'm not mistaken, the 4 bore in these pictures was built by Clayton Nelson. Also, while I haven't seen it personally, the owner of the 4 bore had several stories about its 2 bore mate owned by one of his friends. As I recall they got as far as 3500 grains at 1750.

bigdoggy7003500 grain bullet at 1750 ft/sec = over 23,000 ft.lbs of energy. Must be pretty stout recoil!

Mike ScottHas anything happened following the talk a year or so ago about making a Wicklffe 76 type action large enough for the 4 bore?
11 August 2008, 10:35
bigdoggy700Macifej,
I do not know very many people that can handle 300 ft.lbs of recoil, let alone 759 ft.lbs of recoil. I shoot a lot of really big stuff and have for along time, and have even been hurt a couple of times, but 760 ft.lbs is rediculous.

What does a Borchardt action cost these days and whom sells them ??
You can do anything on these yes ??

GrandpasezWe are still working on scaling up a
Wickcliff to do bigger cases. Got
to set up more equipment.
Al Story at Borchardt Rifle makes his
for about 3 grand. That's one like Rob did
the 12GA FH in.
The one our friend Cannon holds above I
think is Kent Lamonts.Nice gun.Ed

Tyler Kempbigdoggy, how has recoil hurt you other than when your pistol came unglued on you?

bigdoggy700Tyler,
other than the 460 weatherby hand gun episode, I have not been hurt by any recoil. An occasional nicked knuckle on my trigger finger from the trigger guard, but thats it. I have never had eye problems and except for a a slightly bruised shoulder now and then after a lot of shooting, no other injuries at all.
31 August 2008, 10:46
MacifejTyler - BigDog had sorbethane implants in his shoulders. He looks like Don Johnson with those big shoulder suits from the 80's...

31 August 2008, 11:18
Rodney H.{500Jeffery}Just reading about the recoil is unbelievable- makes me want to take a couple flexeril and chase them with a glass of bourbon. R.

Tyler KempI pulled sporting clays for a big black guy named Don Johnson yesterday...who is that, the name sounds familiar.
