Tell me what you think. I'm about to order a Montana M1999 barrel action in 416 Rem as a ground squirel back up gun( have you seen the teeth on those things). I wanted to get a 404Jeff (they said they could do it ) but the extra $550 to $600 (builder-dies -cases) over makeing it in 416 Rem would be hard to handle at my income level. I'm going to set it up for just scope now but will put on NECG sights later if needed. Whats your thoughts on the action, barrel contour, barrel lengh, scope mounts, and caliber? PS: my wife has told me its my birthday-fathers day-xmass present for 2007 thru 2015.

I think this is a GREAT idea. The price is reasonable, and if you want to keep the price down, re-use a winchester long action take off stock... you can get the gun up and running for X, and then add wood and improve it later.. like a running project.

I would go for something like a 24" barrel, about .650 to .700 at the muzzle. If this is your first big bore, and a 416 rem was my first "real" one, you will think it's kicking the heck out of you. go for about 9 to 9.5# finished.

as for a scope... hmmmm, hard call. this WILL have an aburpt(sp) recoil, and I got my first AND second weatherby eye brow cut from the same 416, as the stock was too short. be CAREFUL

Good choice IMO...take a look at the LH 416 in the left hand forum...it is a great looking rifle and were I to choose one for DG it would have several of the same features.
Is MRC back in business? Last I heard they were still not making actions....hope this has changed!

You can't go wrong with a 416 Rem Mag. I built one on a stainless Model 70 a few years back and it's one of my favorite big-bores.

They weren't out of business, they were waiting for actions from Pinetree Casting.

I would lean to the .700-.725 barrel diameter at 24 inches. I have a 1.75-6x Leupold with the no. 4 reticle on a Ruger .416 Rigby and it is perfect for one of these. I have shot groups as small as .256 center to center with the 370 NF's and H4831SC with this combination.

I just talked to them also, the lead time on a left handed, stainless long action is 3-4 months.

Frank,
Do you know if this is the lead time on all LH actions or just the stainless? Has the pricing changed on their actions?

thanks

All I asked about is the stainless. Email them or call them from the contact information on their website here: www.montanarifleman.com They're pretty good about it.

For right around $1k, you can have a decent big bore this way. This was seemed the best way for me to setup a stainless big bore. Mine is a .450 Ackley and although the action is a bit rough the barrel is a honey! The #5 contour, 23", barreled action before stocking weighs 6lbs, 2oz. Do what Jeffe says with a Winchester stock or use a Boyd's laminate. Both will need a little bedding work.

I would order the rifle from the get go with the iron sights of your choice installed.
There are no flies on the 416 Rem Mag.
I would want quality Quick detach rings/mounts.
