I sent out a ruger stainless 338 to get rebored to a 458. I know people will probably laugh at this but oh well. anyway it has the older paddle stock made of zytel i think but do you think this will hold up to 500gr loads. in my experience these are pretty tough and am sure they'll hold up with 350's but what do you guys think.

You are going to find someone to rebore that 338 barrel to 45 cal I wouldn't think that the barrel walls would be thick enough.

I have 2 paddle stocks they work just fine but I haven't shot them on any bigger then a 338.

My 416 has the new style.

My latest 458 Lott is currently residing in a plastic butler creek handle, and so far 500's @ 2250 cause it no problems. It does need to bedded, and definately has some flex to it.

Griz
Every re-borer I’ve dealt with took forever. A new barrel might cost a little more but is usually better than the average rebore, not that this will matter much on a 458 as they shoot fine with good or bad bores. A new barrel will also let you choose the contour so you can add a little weight to the gun if needed. Your factory plastic stock should take the recoil but they are pretty thin and slick for a bigger gun. If the recoil is too much then you might try a Hogue stock. They are nice and fat and sticky so you get a good grip. Mcmillian stocks are technically the best synthetic stock out there, in my opinion. Nice Griz stopper!

thanks for the replies. I just checked out my friends rifle that he had done the same thing and it looks sweet, just like a factory job. i just wanted a light 458 so this should work and i probably will mount a 1.5x5 on it and shoot 350gr barnes but also like the idea of shooting 500's for a lightwieght camping gun...

grizzinater,

Can you give more info on the rebore? At what length will this barrel be finished and at what muzzle diameter?

Gary, the barrel will still be a 24in barrel unless i decide to cut it down to 22. As far as the muzzle diameter i am not sure but it would be whatever a ruger 338 barrel is. it will be thin but the company said its safe to do and could even port it but i will not have that done. if i feel its to thin then i will cut the barrel back a little which should give me a little more meat..

The old paddle stock was strong and stable but in a 458 with 500 grain bullets and that tiny butt...your going to find out a whole new meaning to "felt" recoil!
I also would be wondering about it holding up long term with a single bedding point. The Ruger factory 458's as you know add a barrel channel bedding point and they would be at least a pound more than your rebore.
