I'm starting to lose track. I have built three and know that AHR has built quite a few. Who out there has one and what have you shot with it? I'd appreciate knowing what actions were used, who built it and what your experience has been. general thoughts etc.
Mine are built on CZ550's and one GMA action. Is everyone still using three groove barrels etc.-Rob

AHR made my 600 OK on a GMA action, bbl at 25 inches excluding brake, 14.5 lbs, Pac Nor bbl, great balance, etc. Have loaded it up tp 2320 fps with brake.
Have shot an American Bison with it for the experience. Fortunately, not much meat was ruined and the bull dropped like the rug was pulled out.
Would really like to try it on ele, maybe someday?????

I built mine on an enfield. So far I have only shot lead flatnose 1040grain bullets at 1880fps at targets. still need to build a muzzle break before going higher. Its a pussycat right now.

Kelly here! I got mine from 300 H&H. Its a CZ550. I have had very little activity with mine since this spring due to seasonal work. I did get it out of the safe a few weeks ago to kill a 30 gal plastic drum full of H2O. Woodliegh soft, I think around 2200ish (would have to check records). Drum jumped about 8" off the ground, split from top to bottom on front and bullet exited the rear. My wife and kids were impressed! About 3 more weeks of work and I can shoot drums til Feb! Anyone interested in joining the fun, drop me a PM. I have LOTS of 2.5 gallon jugs to kill also.

I've shot two blacktails and one black bear with mine as well as countless meadow grizzleys! Max velocity I have survived for was 2439 fps. The cartridge is capable of more but the survival instinct kicked in a little early. The results were how shall I say it. Impressive! Hyraulic stops! Looked like you shoved a beer can through something. looks like AHR has been real busy. How many of you have single stack mags and how are they working out? -Rob

Rob,

How much does the 600 ok weigh that you were getting 2439 ft/sec? I assume that you were using a brake when you shot these loads? barrel length?? thanks

I'll find the drawings and post them. I always use a muzzel brake. Without it, there is no way I could handle the gun except at the .600NE level. I have honestly never understood the so called muzzel brake controversy. I've hunted a pretty fair amount mostly in the US and Africa and have never been concerned in the least about the increased noise of a muzzel brake. I've never ever had it bother me in the field. On the Bench at a club sure( usually ear muffs solve this problem though), but out hunting? No way! No PH ever complained either, to the contrary they apparantly were will to trade putting their fingers in their ears vs the need for extensive tracking! This way we got back to serious drinking much faster! The brake reduces the recoil 40-50% and lets me shoot way better because I don't fear the recoil. Thats a good thing in my book! My barrel is 26 inches long and one of the original 9 three groove Pac-Nors that we did a group buy for with participants from this site.. That barrel design was exhautively debated here and came out of my .50BMG competition experience( every fps is an advantage over the wind at 1000 yrds) In that the three groove design usually results in overall lower pressures and a little more speed.Probably 75fps or so. Right or wrong that was what we all deceided on it it seems to work. What I do know is that every one of the .600 OKs built has been exceptionally accurate. That max speed was hit with RN 900gr Bridger monolithic bullets Coated with Danzac. I have lost track of what AHR is building these days and am wondering if the newer guns are made with std 6 groove barrels now. No one else seems to have gone over 2350fps and I'm wondering if its the barrels or just the survival instinct kicking in.-Rob

Rob, Have 3 groove bbl and is very accurate. Do not have a single stack magazine, but have no problem chanbering Woodleigh 900 gr solids, but the softs can be a bit sticky. When measured, the softs proved to be slightly longer.

Rob,I think you know most about mine....I am waiting for more ammo in 160-168 gr to shoot im my lighter 10 1/2pd version and later on in my 8-9pd "Hogzilla" due by the end of the year..What vel do you think I can expect with 20" 3 groove with 160,165 & 168 loads?(I only need about 2100 I think)I have the single column feed and it feeds perfect!Ed is making me a extended 3 round drop box for it soon.I will hunt w/o the break as that appeals more to me at the moment, but like you said, its not a big deal..Also,fired T-Rex (4 bore dbl)today again and I have it on a few mini video clips, which I hope to post here when I can figure it out!Send me a PM with your email and number please and I will send you clips!Quite amuseing to see me get hit like Tyson did!...

Safarikid- will do. One of my guns is 24.5lbs and the other is 12.5lbs. With the compressed 168gr load you should see 1950fps or so. That should really be no problem without the break. I've used that load in a Heym .600NE and thats what I got. The Heym has no brake and kicks like a mule, however, when hunting I doubt I'd notice it when ol Mbogo is 20 ft away or so.-Rob

Safarikid,

Will you use only solids on the buff or some softs? What brand bullets?

And what velocity will you use for the buff?

Iron sights or scope?

Rob, maybe a dumb question, but do you use any form of hearing protection during hunting?

I shot my first game with a 30-06 without hearing protection, and that was the first and last shot with "naked" ears for me. The ringing in my ears went on for roughly 24 hours and I found that to be quite scary.

I will be using Woodleigh Soft Points (900grs) somewhere around 2000fps w/iron sights, though I have a scope also with QD rings..

Rob,
Mine was built on a CZ550, with a 3-groove barrel from the original order.I think mine was the 3rd or 4th one built.

I had the barrel shortened to 23" and can achieve 2300fps with it. That is more than enough, I think. Big Grin

Btw, I was cleaning the reloading room the other day and found the throating reamer that Fritz454 sent me. Should I return it to him or send it to you? I thought I had sent it back, but I must have set it on the bench and forgot about it.
