has any one thought of making or try and make a .500 S&W mag bolt action rifle ???

I have a NEF with a 22" barrle and it is awsome I have some hand loads 4000ftlbs of energy and some a bit hotter than that and I though it would be cool to make a Bolt action .500 S&W Mag. Figerd on a Ruger Action I just dont know what bolt face would work the rim is .556 on a winchester case and .555 on the Horidy case it dose fit just fine in my Mossin action but want to bild off somthing that has a high cup rating. So was thinking a Ruger action in WSM or SARUM but I need to know the rim dimiter on those casses ??? and my COL is not going to be grater than 2.3" and want it to stay around that 22" range but i will have a muzzle brake on it.....

I like what I got but it would be cool to have a repeter in the .500 S&W Mag my hand loads are all Hodgon powder Lil"gun and H4227 the Lil'Gun is 175-200 fps Faster than posted Pistol Specks and H4227 is 15-175fps faster than the posted Pistol Specks I have 400gr JSP going 1900+ fps and some 370gr Hard Cast going 2000+ fps I should beable to get a 275gr Barns X to go close to 2300 fps, it makes for a radical bear gun and compact big game gun Bear,Moose,Elk.

With open sights I am able to keep 4" groups at 200 yards with my NEF off a bench so yes now I want try and bild me a new toy

I'd like to see it in a lever action. Maybe a Mod 71?

If I remember correctly I saw somewhere a dude built a bolt action .500S&W off of a Mosin Nagant, the rifle is plenty strong to handle it. He had a few problems with getting it to feed correctly, however it all worked out in the end. Maybe one of those Browning A-bolts? You definitly wouldn't go wrong with a Ruger however.

One of my projects this year is to build a 500 linebaugh (.510 bullets) on a nagant..

since I HAVE shot the linebaugh in a small AND warmly loaded pistol I have zero interest in having rounds that can go in a pistol (the pistol kicks the crap out of my hand)

So, my thought was to use a long bullet, seat the whole thing as long as possible, which lets the nagant continue to feed as designed, and try it that way.

Tom gave me a 20" section of .510 barrel, and I need to get a nagant one day..

figure it would be a GREAT 4x4 gun

btw, the linebaugh is .510 bullets, the sw and beowolf are .500 bullets

Those Nagants do make nice 45-40/90/100's, hardly any work. A local guy is building one in 50-90 on the nifty octagon receiver variation. Tapered octagon to round 22" bbl. Draw-filed and polished up they do look pretty nice...boltface is .570" fyi.

Jeffeosso- I agree man! I just got back from the range this morning shooting a 4" barreled .500, using Hornady 500gr slugs. Missing a chunk off my right thumb and still trying to get the feeling back!

I have a old Mosin rifle lying around, the barrel's bent so it's been kinda sitting around collecting dust. I was planning on making it a target rifle but it really never came to. That's a awesome platform though. Think a 20" barreled .500 bolt rifle would be right at home here in Alaska where I'm currently on leave.

Isn't the 50 boewolf basically just a rimeless 500 S&W. I heard somewhere that thier reloading data is pretty much interchangeable, don't quote me on that though. Seems like it would be an easier conversion on a short action bolt gun than the rimmed 500 smith.

500magman, Gary Reeder uses 500 S&W barrels for his custom Encores so it is out there. I have one of his barrels so check with Shilen, Montana Rifleman or Douglass.

TheBear_78 they are close but still the .500 Smith is a bit more power full and also when you have 700 rounds loaded and 2000+ cases laying a round why buy another cartrig

I am a long time fan of the .500 S&W and thought of the idea of just putting a FL stock on the pistol and a 26 inch barrel. Now you'd have a modern revolving rifle that would have pretty much 100% reliable feeding, holding six shots for a 400 gr bullet at nearly 2100fps. Thats pretty much DGR territory.
A .303 enfield would also be easy to make work with the advantage of being able to use longer bullets. -Rob
