I plan to build a .50 caliber on a CZ550, but I need some more information about .495 A Square and .500 A Square. I like to use 535 and 570 grains bullet at 2200 to 2300 fp/s. I do need some information about the .495 A Square about the length of case and load. I like to use loads with low pressure. I also like to know how to make brass for the two calibers.

I have foud some information about the .500 A Square, but nothing about .495 A Square. Who offer reloading tools for those calibers?
Where can I look at pic on both cartridges?
Anyone here who have experience of those calibers in hunting?

the 500 is a , iirc a 2.85" 460 weatherby, and the 495 is a 2.65.. or there abouts... these are made from 460 weatherby brass, fire formed.

NEITHER are low pressure, and if that's your requirement, you can't get your velocities from low pressure.


if you are willing to accept the pressure, you can get 535gr at 2300 from either.. and both will be higher pressure than the 500 jeffe.

i believe both are in "any shot you want" and carts of the world (CoW)

i will suggest that you get the books first, and read of them, before you dive in, as where you knowledge level on these, right now, leads me to believe you will be rather "surprised" by the recoil, costs, lead times, etc

The 500 will achieve those velocities with lower pressures, but as Jeff says, neither of those rounds are low pressure. I would say that due to the cost of 460 Whetherby brass, the 500 A-sq is more practical than the 500 Jeffrey or the 505 Gibbs.

I believe CH4D makes reloading dies for the 500 A-sq. Not sure about headstamped or pre-formed brass, vs just getting 460 W and necking it up.

Buy the A2 book and reloading manual "Any Shot You Want" 623 pages edited by Art Alphin. Great book for big bore fans.

You are correct. Mine are CH4D and work like a charm. Not to mention that they were less than half the price of RCBS dies.

Properly headstamped brass can be difficult, though. A-Square sells it, but I'm leery of their quality and would have to hear from others that it's okay before I would buy it.

Well.. the 500 jeffe is 20+ more grains of water capacity, and doesn't "make" the published loads for the 500 a2... sort of like a 30-30 being loaded faster than a 30-06 (not possible at same pressure)

the jeffe is a 22 long ton (i think ) which is 2240X22.. or 49280 psi... so, an extraction would be that the 500 a2 is AT LEAST that high a pressure to match the 500 jeffe loads...

iirc, saami (yeah, it's sammi'ed) for the 500 a2 is 63k psi.. I believe it's the same pressure for the 495.
