Snellstrom, I went through that stage some many years ago, built myself a 7 lb. 505 Gibbs IMP. It was a sweethart and pointed like a .410 boss. After all you only shoot it a very few times on Safari and you pack it miles was my reasoning, and something I read by some brilliant gun writer. Went to the range and squeezed off a shot, dead center at 50, my math was spot on. Next shot hit the dirt half way to the target, I stumbled to the truck, stuck it in a bag and went home, put an add in Gunlist and peddled that sucker to the first buyer along with a stern warning of its recoil potential and like me he felt that he could handle it, Turned out he couldn't either..I have seent that gun advertised for sale in Gunlist no less than 7 or 8 times over the years!! I named that rifle, something I seldom do. Called it Satan. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I calculated the recoil energy of my Lott: 68 ft. pounds, a damned sight less than 128! Mine weigh 11+ pounds and isn't bad off hand.

Jeffe, Thanks for the welcome. You misunderstood my original post. I've never had trouble with my eight pound .416x300. It is a mild but noticeable 45 ft lbs. My excursion to hell was with that little 5.5 lbs monster. Not a chance I could ever tame that gun enough to concentrate on why it was at my shoulder. And as another poster already said, after the vision was affected my thought was about the potential for a torn retina. I like my .416 and kinda think it adequate for whatever hair-brained mischief concerning African beasts in the upper midwest the greens can come up with. gudlif

After a OZ water buff excursion, I got the idea to build a 7lb .458 Ackley on a M98. It really turned out pretty nice but did kick a mite. Accurate as hell though. I used a carbon fibre stock, M98 action and real light profile barrel with a machined in muzzel break and open sights. I made the mistake of letting a buddy shoot it and money changed hands. Many of you have shot my little CZ589 double that weighs 8lbs in 450 Lott and no one has had any trouble. I don't see why a 5lb gun is that much worse.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

WELL,My 2 cents and everone has at least that much!Yes,they kick,I am not superman and I must confess,on the bench getting things dialed in,I used my trusty Leadslead w/50 pds of shot...tames my 9 &10 pds 600AHR's!No,I wont use my 4 bore double as it just has TO Much Torque and such a Big Shove, that it would probably break the dern thing!Offhand is fine and its not as bad as it looks!...Now,my next Kicker is being done as we speak,a LW 500Jeff that is coming in at 5 1/2-6 pds, plus Leupold 2.5 and mnts for a total of 6 1/2 pds or so,will know for sure soon..I will push Barnes 570X's around 21-2200 from its LW 16 " SS Shilen and yes, thats sixteen inchs, but IT WILL have a Integral Brake,so that should help a good bit, though I dont like them Breaks, but I will have one on my "Beastmaster" (like that Satan name, but too Supersticious Ray!)I look forward to this one as it will be so Unique, even for me,and Quite Handy backup for this years Two Alaskan Brown Bear Hunts and Wyoming Bison with my Lil Friend",a BFR Revolver 50/110 Custom 7"(600gr Woods at 1450!)Guys,I still stick to my guns and say I carry alot more than I shoot,Africa and Alaska...The Retina thing concerns me,but I have also heard that is more of a individual thing, esp. with diabetics, but I'm no Doctor...Last,I don't fight the recoil,I roll with it if need be and I NEVER feel them go off when I am "On the Hunt"!
