Anybody got a .416, preferably Rigby, located in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, or Mississippi, that they'd be willing to allow me to test-fire. I've got a terrible itch for a RSM in 416, but don't know how I'm going to handle the recoil. I started with 375 H&H last spring and have come to love shooting it. Recoil was a little iffy at first, but has become a non-issue. Now I want to step up, but don't want to spend the money for the rifle if I can't shoot it. I'd be more than happy to reimburse you for any expenses including ammo of course, and will drive up to 4 hours (250 miles from Ft. Payne, AL) to "try one on".

If anyone can offer some assistance, I would be forever greatful.

Well I have a .416 Rem that you might want to test. And if you come over I will let you test it for free. The only problem is location. You mentioned 250 miles ---- add some zeroes.

i fyou can shoot a LIGHT 12ga with heavy slugs, you can handle the recoil... try the winchester slugs in a break open single barrel

recoil is in your MIND mostly

...........Just like your 375 was [a bit much at first ] so will the 416 probably be ,., if you hand load it is easily solved ,., but if the rifle fits you well it,s no problem ....just start easy ,., and dont try to shoot more than a magizine or 2 when you go to the range ......

What could I put through my SBE II to simulate it. Don't have a slug barrel. Turkey loads through it aren't bad, 3" or 3-1/2". I also shoot 10ga. but it's a Browning Gold so recoil is actually less than the light Benelli.

Mr. Walther, I appreciate your offer, but Europe is out of the question at this point as I'm working on buff in Zim for 2009. At a later date I may very well take you up on that.

I agree with you Jeffe, recoil is a lot of mental hogwash, really, but if it becomes too mental, it's a real problem. I really think I can handle the Rigby, but I'm not 100% on that. I'd like to test drive one first, if possible. I'd hate to go buy one then take a couple hundred beating if it doesn't work for me.

x2mosg ----- I have a .416 Remington model 70 Safari Express with a muzzle brake and a Ruger Number 1 in .416 Rigby with a muzzle brake. I also have a private shooting range and you would be more than welcome to come shoot both rifles. I live exactly 2 hours North of the Nashville airport. If you know how far South of Nashville you live be your own judge. Good shooting.

David, if you drove 250 miles(one way), your vehicle gets 15 mpg, and gas cost $3 gal. You will have spent $100, not counting wear on your car. Just buy the RSM and dies and work you way up to full house loads. You are already comfortable shooting the 375H&H, it is not that big of a step up to .416s. The RSM will be a bit heavy for caliber(same contour barrel as the Lott). You can load from light Taylor up to full house 416 Wby.(same basic case volume w/belt)

to add on to what HK said.. buy the RSM in a lott, and have bullets weights from 250 to 600gr to play with, and SMASH critters with

the rsm is HEAVY in a 416... VERY much too heavy

HK, very valid points. The gas money for a 500 mile round trip would buy dies and brass to get started. I think I can deal with the recoil, especially off-hand or off sticks. Bench work would have to be limited of course. But, as you suggested, I've heard it's easy to load the Rigby down to much lighter loads. The 375 is no problem anymore. It's in for a tune-up right now and getting a new decelerator in the process. The factory Winnie hard rubber Pachmayr was pretty useless.

Jeffe, I've considered the Lott very seriously, since it's said to be loadable from 45/70 up to full house 500 grainers. With the Rigby load somewhere in between. Also, I don't think the Lott uses as much powder. That could be a definite plus.

I live about an hour north of Atlanta and have a RSM in 458 Lott that you're welcome to try.

gi, that's a definite possibility as I will most likely be down that direction in the spring, or possibly before fishing out of Delacroix.
