Rifle- Win M70
Caliber-416 Rem Mag
Bullet- 370 gr North Fork soft
MV- 2500 fps
Range- 120 yards
Edited for Safari Hunt- Animal was facing away from me and presented a right quartering shot.
Bullet entrance- Just in front of Rt Rear quarter and centered on the body
Bullet path- parallel to the spine just inside left front shoulder and centered on the body.

Question:
Considering the above situation would the bullet exit the animal or be recovered within the animal? It was a large warthog and considering the bullet path it would be roughly 2.5 ft of animal to penetrate. Pictures will come next week, we are still here shooting the hell out of some critters!

Choices:
Yes
NO
Yes and it will get up and run
No and it will get up and run

I've never used a .416, but I shot a warthog chest on at 10yds. with a .375H&H / 300gr. Swift A-Frame, and the bullet did not exit. We found it beautifully mushroomed in the pelvic region after about the same 2.5ft. of penetration.

If you hunt long enough, you will see some weird things.

I also busted a quartering on warthog at less than 30 yards with .375H&H 270 gr TSX with no exit and the hog ran about 60 yards before giving up.

It isn't uncommon at all for bullets not to exit from a .375 on big feral hogs. I however have never had one stop a .470 or a .458.

Sorry for the late follow-up! I have been lost in Panther swamp chasing whitetail deer since I have been home. Here are a few pictures of the warthog that took on my 416. The most accurate answer is "No the bullet did not exit and after falling to the ground for what we thought was a bang flop, he gets up and runs about 50 yards only to crash again for good. Tough little bastards! Well, his little buddy stuck around too long observing the action so I busted his ass too as he was fleeing toward the bush.

The PH is showing the entrance with his right hand and left hand is where bullet was recovered.

And the bullet. It appears to have hit something hard other than flesh?? Comments welcome... Sorry, We didnt do an autopsy because the Castle Lagers were calling!

That's interesting. I had almost the exact shot except that I shot him in the right hip and the bullet exited the left rib cage after crushing the spine. Virtually the same length of penetration. 200 gr Barnes TSX from an 8x57.

Can't say at 120 yards, but I shot a warthog, same presentation except to the left with a .416 Rem., 400 gr. TBBC at about 30 yards. No exit, but complete devastation to the entire back half of the animal. It was truly shocking and beyond belief. Obviously tumbled.

I thought the animal to be transferred from side to side to continue running the projectile does not cede all their energy, but I see that I was wrong. I think that 416 is a lot size for a boar.

I took almost that same exact shot on a warthog with a 300gr. Partition out of a .375 H&H. That bullet went in near the ham and penetrated the full body ending up near the throat. That hog lived through the night and we found him still with plenty of "go" the next morning. He even fell and stayed down for a while at the shot, I still don't understand how it lived that long. Pound for pound I was really impressed at how tough they are.

Kyler

I have read (my experience in hunting is very little, but reading a lot jejeje), that all or most species living in Africa are very resistant to fire, many of them (today I read that to abate is a waterbuck required calibers powerful and a very good placement of the draft) needs caliber shots higher than his appearance advised to use.

Kind of a trick question. Would the bullet exit the animal or be recovered within the animal? Yes= yes to both, wouldn't it have to be yes to one and no to the other?

I wou;d have answered yes to the exit wound, but it looks like it didn't. That's one tough porker!!!

Mississippian ----- Good to see you used the "best bullet manufactured in the U.S. and back in business". I used your identical battery in the Selous for Buff. Good shooting.

Spain is often the case that if the hunting of wild boar or deer using large cartridges(300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, 375 H & H Mag ... etc) are transferred without killed in the moment, reaching the piece sometimes dying to travel long distances far from the dumpsite.
