470 Capstick Wunderload: Buffalo Beware!!!
What a difference just switching bullets makes.
North Fork Cup Point:
Barnes XLC:
My barrel is a 10" twist McGowen 26" long and matches the one Art Alphin used in his manual, identical, except mine is on an M70 Winchester custom.
This is the max safe load for that powder (H4895) shown in the A-Square manual. With the "Monolithic" brass .475/500gr A-Square solid bullet, pressure was 59,400 psi and velocity was 2387 fps.
I am sure the North Fork pressure is lower.
Some have claimed to have had a loss of accuracy with the .474" NF CPU versus the .475 NF FPS.

I don't buy it. They both work fine in my .470 NE Merkel and my .470 Capstick M70. Soon I will see how they work in the .470 Mbogo. Three different barrel twists and velocities to be tried.
The Steel Mistress will get penetrated tomorrow.

WyoJoeHow are those loads for recoil?

There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor polite, nor popular -- but one must ask, "Is it right?"
Martin Luther King, Jr.
WyoJoe,
With the 2.5X Leupold in QRW rings, my rifle fully loaded, with 4 rounds, weighs 11 pounds. It has a heavy barrel. It is very gentle on my end. BTW, the Cup Points feed fine in my M70.

Since Mitch trained me with 42 rounds of "The Torque" of his .577 T-rex, on a far away island (Long Island) long, long ago, I've had no pain from sensible rifles... (stares off whimsically into space) ...
Er, uh, where was I ... tic tic (twitching uncontrollably) ...
May The Torque be with you.

KMuleinAKrip - 50 yard distance is what that beast is intended for, any 100 yard groups yet ??

Yeah, I know it ain't dangerous at 100, just askin'

KMule

KMuleinAK,
It is hard enough to see the gnat sitting on the center of the target at 50 yards with the 2.5X scope, but it should be back on zero again about 125 yards. I did go one "clickless" graduation left after I shot those groups.
Heck, Chief Thunderstick and I have shot his .470 Capstick and my Merkel .470 NE out to 300 yards and got them on paper.
He just holds on the point where the thin section meets the thick section of the lower portion of the reticle. Right on.
I use Kentucky Windage and Tennessee Elevation with the double.
I'll shoot a 300 yard group with the bolt action and let you know. Should be about 1.8" for three shots with my .470 Capstick at 300 yards.

500grainsWho says the ghost shoulder on the capstick round does not contribute to accuracy?

Well, I sure appreciate the .470 Capstick more and more all the time. My scoped M70 needs company in the form of a CZ 550 Lux Hogback rebarreled to .470 Capstick

: 5 or 6 down in the box. Maybe a seven-shooter, what?

GerardRIP,
Nice group there. I have been wanting to ask this for a while: If you are a medical doctor, how come your handwriting is so legible?

Gerard,
Illegible handwriting comes from boredom, fatique, and haste to keep the cattle call rolling. That is why we have electronic medical records now with prescribing by click of mouse and canned notes by template with minimal free-typing.
You should see my handwriting after 23 hours in hospital.
And besides, I am an artiste!

See you in RSA!
Best Regards,
