Hello

This is my entry into the ultra big bore. It is a 585 Nyati built by SSK on a Weatherby mk 5 single stack action weighing 12.5lbs. The only draw back using the Weatherby action is you are limited to a case rim diameter of .590. However, my local gunsmith has made up tooling to turn the case rims from the .640 to .590. I added a extended magazine floor plate which allows this rifle to hold two in the magazine. This gun feeds perfectly the CEB, Woodleighs, TSX, and Banded solids both flat nose and round nose. The accuracy is unbelievable! I have run loads though it up to 2400fps.

Very nice looking all weather rifle. Getting a 585 Nyati to feed reliably is a feet in itself. Hope you enjoy shooting big animals with it. Is the case length 2.8 " ?

Coloradoyaler,

Very interesting.
Good setup for vertical-single-stack feeding of big-fat-rebated cartridges. tu2
Could you show us a picture of the feed lips on the front-top of the magazine box, near the feed ramp, with a cartridge in the box?
Heck while I am begging,
also show us a picture of the boltface at the back of the magazine, ready to push a cartridge forward,
please?
I am interested in doing a little brother to your rifle, in 500 Jeffery, or just a standard 500 A2. tu2

The magazine box is a factory one with its ears spread a little to allow the cartridge to rise up a bit. Again it feeds all bullets even the flat nose.

Cool! Shows how adequate the 585 Nyati shoulder is,
and the rebated rim is no problem for the Mark V ...
Thanks tu2

Well the 500A2 would be easy as the same case head as 460. I wondered about the 500Jeffery when i built my 510 Wells. I went with the Wells as brass is way easier for me to find and the smith already had the reamer. I would love to build a bigger one but the choices for brass are limited that will fit. I guess the OP has found a way around this.

Very nice gun

Although the Wby Mark V is looked down on at this forum, when in the 378 based calibres very few rifles will beat it for relaibility of feeding and especially with blunt bullets.

It is a Burris Fastfire II. I shot the rifle for accuracy with a 2x7 Leupold. I remove the scope and am trying the red dot to see if it will handle the recoil. So far I like it on the rifle I just don't know if it is durable enough. If it is I might go to the burris fastfire III. The rear sight is just the basic williams rear sight.

I would have put the fastfire on the front of the action. Is there a reason to put it on the back? I have no reason for my thinking, just thought that was best

You could go bigger. A 505 Gibbs case in an opened Wby bolt face would be similar to a Rem 700 done as 300 Lapua.

There was a bloke on a Wby forum had a few Wbys on the 505 case, ranging down to 45/505 and 416/505 and with the neck shortened.

JUut as you expaneded the lips of the magazine some go the other way and narrow the gap and for the 300 RUM case.

Mark V Wbys just make life simple, easy and reliable Big Grin

Mike,

I could open the bolt face. But, If in the future I can't handle the recoil of thism rifle I can have it rebarreled to something smaller.

Pop

It is easier for me to pickup back there

Very true. Not too many people want more than a 378 or 460 Big Grin

Just for historical content, some of the first NYATI's were in fact built on the .416 Rigby/.460 WBY boltface diameter. Later it was enlarged to the .505 boltface dimensions. The problem is that the currently available cases need the rims turned down and CHAMFERED to provide reliable feeding. Irregardless, your gun looks nice and you will enjoy the Nyati!-Rob

The fastfire is working great on this rifle. I have shot about 50 rounds through it since it was installed. As you can see it is holding point of aim well. I am getting consistant groups at 100yds of 1"- 2" off the bench for three shots. This jack was sitting up at 105yds and was shot off the sticks with a 750gr TSX @ 2100fps.

Hello

I bought some new Bertram Brass and formed them and shot them. I have shot 10 rounds of this brass four times and have had no problems. I researched this website and was real nervous about bertram brass but at this point I have had no problem.

Still can't see much of those feed lips on the front of the magazine box.
A view looking down into the box of the open action, near the feed ramp would be most interesting, please. Wink

The magazine box is a factory 460 Weatherby Box with the ears spread to accept the 585 case. I can't get a pic from the top without taking the base off.

Bigdoggy
I have shot 130gr, 135grs, and a few at 145grs of RL15. The velocity is as follows respectively- 2150fps, 2230fps, and 2425fps.

Coloradoyaler,

Thanks for pointing out how the "lips" on the rear half of the box sides at top are opened outward for the bigger cartridge.

The area I was interested in is the front end of the box.
In small cartridges like the 460 WBY Big Grin
there are a couple of "ears" bent inward that guide and center the rising bullet on the feed ramp.
From your picture, near the ogive of the .585-caliber TSX, looks like these are straightened out to almost vertical?
Is that correct?

Makes sense, as your bullet is almost as big in diameter as the belt of the 460 WBY.

Mine won't need to be worked over that much,
for the little ones like the .510 caliber chamberings. tu2

And your drop floor plate is the standard item supplied by the Weatherby Custom Shop,
same as used on their "Dangerous Game" models, eh?

If it isn't broken, don't fix it! I have a single stack magazine in my .505 Gibbs and it fixes so many feeding issues I'm sold on it.

Ron,

I don't have a 30 or 338/378 here but I think the box was the same as the 460.

The old Mark V is good gear

They all use the magazine box like the SMLE. The early 9 lug 30-06s were the same as a 460, except for the bolt guide length. However, have that lengthened, open bolt face and new extractor, 378 magazine box and follower and you are on your way.

A mate of mine had a 270 Wby converted to 416 and thee gunsmith reckoned the bolt was made of real good and tough stuff. Fucked up one his tools on lengthening the bolt guide.

Of course there is no pinky finger with a Mark V Big Grin

Mark Vs have true controlled feed Big Grin
