I recently saw somewhere (a recent Gun Digest or similar publ.) a line of bolt action double rifles...looked very heavy and very deadly...Does any one know anything about these?...I'm wondering if they aren't the same rifles that were developed years ago by a retired European-Canadian Machinist in Windsor,Ontario (I think...This was also the subject of a Gun Digest type article..years ago...and the article mentioned that some European firm was interested in producing them commercially)....Double rifle repeater? Don't want or need one...They look very heavy...but interesting nonetheless. (the Frankonia Jagd catalogue used to advertise a bolt action Mauser98 combination rifle (Rifle above, shotgun below)...it was expensive...hasn't been advertised for some time)
You're right Waterwolf, this is an Austrian continuation of the first one made in Canada, and it is an exercize in futility, IMO. Though it seems like a good idea on the surface, it reliably takes away the very reason for a double rifle, over a bolt action.
The conventional double rifle is basically two indipendant rifles on the same stock, with no chance of a feeding jam. The bolt type action must, by design , be as long as the magazine before you get to the barrels, makeing the rifle at least 6, or 7"longer than the break top double, with the same length barrels, and at least 2 lbs heavier before loading. To top this off, they use a push feed action design......... Even if the rifle cost half what a field grade conventual double rifle does, I would not buy one. IMO, this conglomeration is a PROBLEM waiting to happen, plus it is BUTT UGLY!

Mac is correct on all aspects of the bolt action bouble. I met the PH who had a good peice of his hand blown off by the prototype rifle in the mid 90's. The manufacturer brought it on safari to Zambia to try it out and he let the PH fire it. The PH is still fighting with the guy over damages. If I remember right the PH was offered $15000.00 to sign off for having part of his hand blown off. Last time I checked it is helpful for a PH to have 2 hands to hold his rifle.

Waterwolf, I had some snail mail discussions with Josepg Szecsei, Holt Bodinson(who wrote the Gun Digest article in 1996) and Ken Warner who was GD editor then. I have never seen any of the guns "in the flesh" but the Szecsei-Fuchs company has a website at www.jagdwaffe.com if you're interested. Mark Young, I have some archival material on guns - my way of keeping up to date with the subject because my country won't allowme to own any new guns except the crap it's ordnance factories turn out - would you have any info on the fiasco that you mentioned? Or, could you put me to the aggrieved PH? I can assure you that I can't afford to ever buy a US$ 98000 rifle (the price Fuchs sells these guns at) but the info would be interesting to file away. Thanks,
The PH's name is Rory Galatley. He lives in Lusaka Zambia in the off season. He worked for the now disbanded Safari Expeditions Zambia. Sorry I have no further contact info. on him.
