Well, construction has commenced on my 8 bore BP rifle and I am looking for suggestions as to the proper LOP.
I curently own a .416 with a LOP of 13.75 and, being an average sized guy (5'10", 180lbs), it fits me fine (maybe a bit short). The dilemma I face with the 8 bore (which I actually intend to use) pertains to a desire to keep my right thumb from knocking me in the nose. This is, of course, countered by my need to keep the thing from hanging up on my clothes while quickly bringing it up to the shoulder. I realize that this is a catch-22 but would appreciate any suggestions you all might have. Thanks in advance.

I am the same height as you (but not quite as fat ). On a heavy kicker, I want 14" of pull. If the pull is too long, it is hard to hold onto the gun. If the pull is too short, felt recoil is exaggerated. Start long and you can shorten it up later. Since you are a bit meatier than me, I think you may end up wanting a shorter pull, but I would start with at least 14" because you can always shorten it.

John on my under hammer its a 14 1/16" lop, it is just long enought to have to push foreward a tad then up to the pocket, but I haven't busted my nose yet

too long a lop is far better than too short, as the gun will FEEL like less recoil...

i would start with aiming at 14.5, and replace the pad/trim the stock if it's too long.

there's a product called slickeeze that makes the pad act like it's hard plastic, for slipping over clothes

Thought you were fiddling on some econometric model to figure out the length

My preference is 14-14,25 LOP, I'm approx. 1,9 meters and 92 kilos.

Start with a long stock and shorten it or get measured with try gun etc.

Don't think I haven't thought of it! All I need is a suffiently large data set of people's body proportions and optimal measuremetns so that I can get stat sig results and arrive at an estimation of my own optimal stock measurements.

I'm 6 feet (183 cm) and 192 lbs (87+ kg). My double 500/450 has a 14-1/2" LOP and is wonderful; the double 350 Rigby No. 2 is the same; and all my shotguns are 14-1/2 to 14-5/8." When I had a bolt rifle made, it came out at 14-1/4" and suits me fine.

John: I suggest that you try several stocks until you find the one that fits you the better. I´m 1.8 meters and very heavily muscled with somewhat short arms. Alas, the BRNO ZKK longish stock puts me right in the sights, just like a well measured Perazzi would.
Good luck with your very interesting project, bear in mind that an 8 bore recoils with some 203 foot-pounds, ouch

I like the length of pull on a standard cz 550 safari.....seems to be just right and I figure it's 14" I am 5' 11" and I agree that the longer LOP makes felt recoil seem less, so thats what I went with on my .585 Nyati as well.
