What goes in the middle?

ArthurOldsWhat goes in the middle?
Assume a 7X57 on the low end and a .404 on the upper, what goes in the middle??? The question is here in the big bore section because a number of you have the .404 and I am interesd in the opinion of those who have used the .404!
I know Ods Sarge has a .404 combined with a .318 WR. Other good choices?
Thanks, Arthur Olds

GeorgeSThis isn't the 'Medium Bores' forum, but I'd pick the .338 Winchester Magnum.

7x57 & 404. No brainer, the 9.3x64. It'll look a lot like the other two and is old!

Rodney H.{500Jeffery}What Jim said otherwise a good 338 Win Mag. Rodney.

SchauckisI'd be inclined to go to the 9,3 section, or .338 as alternative.
There are a couple of nice .35s, too like .35 Whelen and .358 Norma Mag.
Anything above 9,3 starts to get a tad "too close" the .404.
.338 Mag or perhaps .338-06?
If 9,3 then x62 for ammo availability although I like the x64 better, and if double then of course x74R.

jvw375.300 H&H and a 9,3x62.
Both on Mauser actions, of course.

GeoffM24I decided on 4 with 7x57 being the low end and 404 being the high and I have a 300 H&H and a 375 H&H in the middle.

Michael RobinsonI'd have to stick the .404 in the middle and bracket it as follows:
.303 - .404 - .505

Excellent numerology by MR.
My numerology:
30 Aught Eight: 300 Lapua Magnum with 300 Wby throat
40 Ought Seven: .395 Tatanka
50 Aught Eight: 500 Mbogo
My trio all work in the same spritely .416 Rigby sized action.

AtkinsonFor me it would be a .338 Win. or perhaps a 9.3x62, either would be suitable as would a good 30-06, everybody should have an 06, it's un-American not to have an ought six and a 30-30 Win carbine. It's just not done Art..

oldunThis is easy, stick to the older proven calibres,
7x57, 9.3x62 with the 404.
The 338 is too much flash and wallop for my tastes.

srshooterIf it's for African hunting I'd go with a .375 H&H in the middle because you can use it for dangerous game if your .404 gets damaged. I know the .375 is on the heavy side of "in the middle" but it is so useful and versatile it belongs on any safari imo!
I plan to take a .375 H&H and a .500 A2 when I go but definately could get by without the .500 A2 because my "medium rifle" could also serve as my "heavy rifle" if need be.

All that aside, I kinda like the .35 Whelen.

Either that or a 358.

nordrsetaYou could always call the 7x57 a 275 Rigby and find a 318 WR or 333 Jeffrey Rimless for your medium. Otherwise a fella could sell the light rifle and the light heavy and just buy a 375...

02 August 2008, 06:12
GarByI say a 333 Jeffery....'cause I'm tired of being the only guy looking for brass!!
Plus it's a neat round.....classic at its best.

lavacaI don't have a problem with the 7x57 as the low end. It's a fine cartridge. I view the .404 as kind of a medium bore, like the .375 and the .416's for that matter. I'd use the .404 as a medium and get a .458, .470, .500, or .505 as a "big bore." If you want to fill the gap between a 7x57 and a .404, I'd think about a .338 or a .300 mag, in one of it's iterations. Just my humble opinion.
