I've worked up 8 500 Jeffery barreled actions in the last 24 months and have two on deck to do. They have all been staggered 3 + 1 set ups.
On two of them we went with the Legacy M-98 action. I remachined the underside of the rails to a new width and depth, and made new boxes and followers to fit. The feed ramps on the Legacys were also reworked for shape angle and finish.
By making the underside of the rails wider and deeper, you make the stack of rounds wider so they will help each other stay in the action, By cutting the rails deeper on the vertical plane you get the rounds to come up higher in the action so the bolt will pick up and not skip over the rebate. Then comes the act of bowing the rails with a dremel tool, this the part of doing a 500 where one must take caution, working the bow of the rail back from the feed ramp to around the halfway point. Get it right and you have a great feeding rifle, get it wrong and you can pitch the action in the trash and start over, I have not had to trash one because in the begining one the first one I took it slow and just did a little dremel work at a time, Then with the action feeding the way it should. I used mold stones to perfect it and improve the finish of the transition. The back of the rail opening is just wide enough to load a round thru, then the carefully bowed rail lets the round pop up into the control of the extractor. Proper underail dimensoins matched with a wider box and follower prevent it from spewing all of the rounds at once when the bolt is pulled back hard to the bolt stop. It takes some more time to do one, anything thats worth a hoot does. I think the real challange is finding an animal worth shooting a 500 Jeffery at. I like the 500 Jeffery, it's Pachyderm pounding perfection.

Timan- Out of curiosity, how much of the front recoil lug did you have to remove on the Legacy M98 action( is it .375 H&H length to begin with?) and did you have to mill material out of the rear bridge to get enough clearance on ejection? Also whose Box did you use and what were the box dimensions? Any Pics of the action?-Rob

What action did Sterling use for yours.

I was reading a bit more about them, and it seems that Wolf makes his with the exact same cartridge without the rebated rim. Is that was the 510 Wells is?
The action he used was a 1935 chilean military contact. It is a great action and it is buttery smooth. The magazine box is Blackburn and was originally ordered for Hartman and Weiss.

What would be the closest in the Dakota Line of cartriges?

I own a 500 Jeffery made by Sterling Davenport. I will probably use on elephant. So far no problems feeding.
